A FINISH AND WIP

This is my most recent finish.  The blocks are from My Whimsical Quilt Garden by Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins from Piece O’ Cake Designs, which is my current work in progress (WIP).  After I had made the blocks and was putting them together, I decided that I didn’t want a quilt that large.  So, I took three of the blocks and made this wallhanging which is now hanging above the washer and dryer in my laundry room.
These are the blocks that ended up in the quilt.  I still have to decide on the narrow inside border and make the appliqués for the outside border.

I took the WIP to the Attic Window Quilt Shop to find a fabric for the inner border.  It is only about an inch wide and the pattern calls for yellow.  I didn’t like what I had and couldn’t decide on one of the many beautiful fabrics at the shop.  Vickie (fellow quilter and teacher) suggested that I make the borders first, bring them and the quilt back to the shop and then see what color of fabric might work best for that inner border.  Above you can see that I have appliqués pinned to one border.  I think she is right.  This will help me determine the color of fabric I need or even if I want to add that inner border.  What do you think?  Suggestions will be appreciated.
This is the one block that I have left.  I think I’m going to make it into another wallhanging, similar to what I did here.

  1. Oh how I love these blocks - Is this the one I bought? I think it is, lol. I probably won't do a border though - maybe - we'll see! It'll take me months to get to it, although after seeing yours I want to start NOW.

  5. What a charming quilt! I haven't seen this book, but I'll be sure to look for it now. I LOVE the outer border - and I don't think you "need" an inner border at all. I especially like how some of the birds' tails go onto the sashing (they were having too much fun to be contained in a block), and the border mimics that by having some of the circles overlap onto the sashing, as well. Thanks for sharing!

  7. I also meant to add that I like it without an inner border. It is just too cute the way you've laid it out there. :)

  8. Whoa! This is seriously cute. I love how the little birds spill out of their blocks into the framing!!! Gonna have to check out this pattern. I am intimidated by needle turn applique, but this is really adorable.

I have to admit, I am liking it without the inner border. And I know that white border on the left is supposed to go all the way around, but I love it just on the one side. Or you could put a narrower border on the other 3 sides. Might look terrible and unfinished, or it could be great. I am into asymmetrical, right now. *grin*

  13. Great idea! I started those blocks, but don't think I'll ever make a quilt. But they are perfect as a small wallhanging. Love the colors you chose! Whoop!

  15. That must be just the right touch for your laundry room! Great job! Your quilt is so cute! I love how the bird spills over onto the border, too. What about black? I think a skinny little black line would be nice? Or the blue in the quilt would make a nice skinny border.
