FINISHES, BLUE RIBBON, AND A QUESTION

Marjorie, our loyal reader who lives in Utah, sent some pictures of her latest finishes.  A big congratulations to her for winning a blue ribbon for the above quilt that she entered in the Utah State Fair.  I love the words on it:  "We are not the black sheep of the family, we are the kiss and teal".  I think the challenge had something to do with teal fabric.  Great job Marjorie!
Marjorie said, "Fall is arriving here in the high desert and I'm still making scraps.  I made this quilt using the double cross pattern from Wombat Quilts.  I used colored scraps and leftover low volume prints from the leftover backing fabric from some quilts.  It is an easy pattern and fast as it is a 12" finished block.
Marjorie also said that she finished the above top.  "It could be done with scraps as it takes only four 1/2" x 5" rectangles of color and background.  The pattern is from the book Making Quilts by Kathy Doughty.  She is an Aussie and makes interesting quilts." 

 Marjorie also has a question for you.  "How do you keep white fabric from fraying as you sew it into blocks and borders?  I have used two different white fabrics in my last two quilts and had to cut off handfuls of frayed threads when finished."

    That IS an interesting question! I´ve never had that problem before, or never noticed it as such. Might be unique to certain weaves, like homespun or rather loosely woven fabric? Maybe once the blocks have been pieced, and using a low tension/slightly on the looser side thread, zigzag along the white edges or all around the block?     Marjorie’s sheep quilt is adorable! So is her double cross quilt. I really like the colorful crosses with the low volume background. I don’t know the answer to fraying white fabric. I imagine one has to handle fraying fabric carefully.
