PARDON MY BRAG

When my grand DIL sent me this picture of my great granddaughter, I was thrilled and had to show it to you.  Who doesn’t love to see a future quilter?   My great granddaughter is only eight years old and has been learning to sew on the sewing machine.  She made a doll quilt earlier this year.
This is what her mother wrote:

“This project was part of the kit she bought at American Village (a colonial re-enactment place in Alabama).  I helped her follow directions and pin the pieces together before she sewed them.  Also, I sewed the buttons on and helped her with the hidden stitch to sew it closed.  Otherwise she did it all on her own.
Her Corners didn’t come together in the center of the pillow.  That’s why I suggested putting a button in the middle to hide that little imperfection.”

I told my Grand DIL that we quilters often use buttons or applique to hide or mistakes. Thanks for letting this NaNa share her joy.

FIRST BLUSH IS NOW

I stopped in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop today and found Charity (above) and Cathy working on their First Blush blocks.  I posted about it last month here.  Apparently I had the wrong information.  This BOM is currently in process.  You can step in and join any time.  The group meets the fourth Wednesday of the month at 11 a.m.  Call the shop for details and to sign up.
Above are the blocks that Charity has made so far. I believe you make two a month.  And it is recommended you stay and sew after class so Cathy can help you with the tricky stuff.  I love the background that Charity has chosen.
I also love these fabrics and had to take a picture of some of her blades to show the fabric to you.
Cathy was busy too, making blocks and using her extra fabric to make the 9 patch squares for the borders.

SEPTEMBER is nearly here and it's time to get back to our sewing.  Gift giving time is coming soon and what lovely gifts you can make with these blocks.  Or you might want to try some of the other classes starting in September.  The new calendar will be available soon so look it over and get started sewing.

    HAVE YOU TRIED THIS?

You might remember that I shared with you here, that Cathy was experimenting with Kraft-Tex.  It is a paper product that combines the best of leather and fabric! It's durable and textured like leather, but made of a paper product that can be cut, sewn, and washed like fabric. It can be embossed, embroidered, painted, dyed, drawn on, and more. Above is the coupon holder that Cathy made. Cathy said, "I played with markers and water color pastels first, then washed, dried and ironed it.  After all that, Cathy said it was still sturdy and very much usable. She also did the stitching around the coupon holder.  She said it was easy and she had no problem stitching on this product.
Where Cathy wrote "Receipt," she used a black marker and it did not hold up when washed.
Cathy said that she did find that the Pentel Permanent Fabric Marker did work very well and lasted through the washing.

Thank you Cathy for sharing with us.  This information is good to know.  I'm looking forward to seeing what else you do with this product.

You can purchase Kraft-Tex at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above Cathy used the gray.  You can also find it in beautiful bright colors at the shop.  For more information about how to use this product you might want to watch the videos here.

    A READER SHARES

I was thrilled to hear from Marjorie, a reader from Utah.  Here is what she wrote:

    "Hi Caroll,
I hope your summer is cool and you have finished lots of projects.
I have been busy getting projects finished.  I finished the challenge for the state fair.... It was using yellow.  I don't do much yellow so it was a long process.
The attached photo is my 11" quilt for the quilt guild challenge.  I used Nadine Ruggles book Inchies for inspiration.  Each little piece is one inch square!
It was a lot of fun.  I hope to make more and make pins out of them and give them as gifts for friends."

Marjorie, Thank you so much for sending this picture.  I can't believe your quilt is made with one inch squares.  I don't know how you work with such small pieces.  Your quilt is stunning.  I love seeing what other quilters do and thank you again for sharing with us!

    STITCH-IN FUN

I attended the Stitch-In at the Attic Window Quilt Shop today and had so much fun.  I learned a lot, laughed a lot, and met a new friend.  Above Kathy shows us the quilt she is working on.  This quilt was a BOM a year or so ago.  Kathy bought the leftover kits and got to work.
This is another section of her quilt.  I love the colors.  This quilt will be stunning.
Cathy M. made some more Fold It Hold It bags for Dégagé Ministries.
    Then she made this!
Since this is Cathy's first project with this "fabric" she chose an easy-to-make coupon holder.
She used Kraft Tex Paper Fabric.  Cathy says you can wash it, wrinkle it, sew it, and paint on it.  She said she will do a lot of testing with her coupon holder.  She promises to send before and after pictures so we can see what happens after it is washed and painted.  Can't wait to see what she does.
This gray is what Cathy used today.
The Attic Window Quilt Shop has Kraft Tex in these beautiful colors too!
Chris (shop owner) showed me a quilt in a magazine.  It was a Dresden made scrappy.  I thought how much fun it would be if everyone came to the shop with their scraps and made a scrappy Dresden.  I used the 30 deg. Squedge ruler which I got at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  It is large and I wanted to make large blocks for this project.  Next I'm going to make a smaller Dresden for the center.  I'll keep you posted as this project develops.

I also worked on these blocks.  When I saw the blocks at the top of the pictures that Chris had made (the ones with red borders) and noticed she had lots of fabric, I decided to make some blocks too.  However, as you may remember, my piecing skills leave a lot to be desired.  I'm not sure I've ever made a log cabin block before.  I did do one in paper piecing years ago, but this was different.  In fact, if you look closely, you can see that my red center square is in the wrong place.  But Chris came to my rescue and showed me how to do these correctly and easily.  Chris is a fantastic teacher and is so willing to help when you are having a problem.  She sent me home with fabric and new knowledge and now I have to get to my sewing room and make blocks!  There is another Stitch-In tomorrow.  Come join the fun!

    HAPPY SCRAPPERS DO GOOD

The Happy Scrappers met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop today and some of us continued to make the Fold It Hold It bags that we are donating to Dégagé Ministries. You can read about the Ministry in yesterday's post.  Jane stopped by to learn how to make the bags and she donated more personal items for us to place in the bags.  She said she will make more bags at home.  Thank you so much Jane.
Janalee worked on a charity quilt.  This is going to be so pretty!
And we had a wonderful surprise.  Lee Anne stopped by!  She is still unable to drive so husband Gene drove her!  She thinks it will be October before she can lift a sewing machine and twist and turn and do all the things involved in sewing with us.  Hope that time goes as fast as this summer has gone by.  We miss her!

A LITTLE OF THIS AND THAT

I haven't really had time to sew this week.  Celebrating the big one!  First of all I'd like to thank everyone who sent cards and well wishes.  And thank whoever sent me this lovely bouquet of chocolate and fruit.  I'm enjoying it and would really like to thank who sent it.  There was no signature on the card.
Also I'd like to thank Barb H. for sending me a lovely card and two pieces of fabric!  I love fabric.  I can never have enough fabric!  That was so nice of you Barb.  Thanks so much.
I may have shown this before.  This is one of the bags I made for Dégagé Ministries.  Cathy sent me this information that I'd like to share with you.

Subject: Exciting News from Dégagé Ministries!
We are so excited to share with you that just this past month,
13 of our Open Door Women’s Center ladies have moved into housing!

This means that since January of this year,
45 Open Door women have secured safe, sustainable housing!

Sherry says, “Dégagé was a place that helped me and other women and has tried to lead us in the right direction. They have helped me very much with everything I need to know in order to be successful.”

We thank God for those like you who care about the people we serve. It is because of you that these women are looking to the future with hope and joy. Thank you for helping to make Grand Rapids a city of possibility for all!

This is such a worthwhile project and when my 94 year old friend Phyllis heard what we were doing, she donated all these personal items for us to put into the bags.  Thank you so much Phyllis.
On a lighter note, I took this picture while at the lake.  No, that is not me in the boat.  I don't know who it is but got a kick out of seeing several of these boats on the lake.  So cute.
