MAKING SLOW PROGRESS

Hello Quilters.  I may not have mentioned this before, but the part about this quilting thing that I dislike the most is cutting fabric.  It really pains me to take my fabric or even my scraps and cut into specific sizes. Some of it is just too beautiful to cut, and there is that little voice in my head that yells, "what if you need the whole piece of fabric later?"   However, I've bitten the bullet and started cutting my 30s fabrics into 4.5 squares, 2.5, squares, and 2.5 X 4.5 rectangles.  Have you been doing that too in preparation for Happy Scrappers when we meet next month at the Attic Window Quilt Shop?  Mary said she would show us her clever way to sew them together.  I blogged about it here.  It doesn't look like I have a very big pile, but if I do a little each day it doesn't hurt that much.  And I keep telling myself it is for a good cause.  I plan to make this a charity quilt.  I hope you will join us on the second Wednesday of the month.

RELAXING BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS

Do you find sewing relaxes you?  I've been relaxing before the busy holidays, and I do that by hand sewing applique.  These patterns are from  the book Whimsical Wool Applique by Kim Schaefer.  You can get it at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
This is a closeup of the two I did this week.
I'm not showing the third one because I showed a picture of it here.  So tell us, what relaxes you?  Are you ready for the holidays?  Have you started gift making?  Can you give us some ideas?  I made two wide open zipper pouches from a pattern by Noodlehead.  Except I did a really dumb thing and put one side of the lining in backwards.  Oh, my, goodness.  Maybe I'll show them later.

It's a busy week this week at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Check out all the activities below.  You won't want to miss anything.

HAPPY SCRAPPERS MEET

A fun time was had by all today when the Happy Scrappers met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  We had some show-n-tell too.  Above Cathy M. shows us her latest quilt.
She had so much fun making the first one, she decided to make another.  Note those cute little prairie points across the top and bottom of the panel.  She spent today adding the binding.  You can get these cute flannel panels at the shop, as well as the coordinating fabrics.
Cathy also showed us this quilt.  She made the blocks when attending Sampler last year.  She said she finally put it together and had it quilted.
Mary Gee did the quilting.  I hope you can see the quilting in the above picture.
Vickie S. showed us her latest wall hanging.  The tree is made with yo-yo's.
This is a closeup so you can see all the work she put into finishing it.  Fantastic job!
Chris showed us this quilt just back from quilter, Carol Huster. Chris said she still has to put the binding on.  What a pretty quilt.
Janalee worked on her Charity quilt.  (Don't you just love her hat!)
We were so happy to see LeeAnne is feeling better and joined us.
She used these beautiful fabrics to make the above block, many blocks.  She said this quilt is for her.
Marti made  a Fold It and Hold It bag for charity.
Mary W. sewed blocks for her charity quilt.  She also brought 20 more of the Hold It and Fold It bags for charity.  We were so intrigued by Mary's organization and how she gets so much done that we asked her about it.
/
She said that when at home we should cut 2 1/2" squares, 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles, and 4 1/2" squares of our fabrics.  She uses 30s fabrics because they all go together so well.  We should organize our pieces into like sizes and bring them to the next meeting when she will show us how to assemble them.  She has a way of putting these pieces together so you don't have to worry about matching seams.  So, get to cutting and organizing and bring your pieces to our meeting next month.

A SCRAP IN TIME SAVES YOU MONEY

I've been playing with my scraps again and made the above table topper from my yellow scrap box.
I gathered my yellow scraps and added them to a muslin template.  Then thought I needed some contrast between the wedge shapes and added the orange.
I added a faux border to finish it off.
Of course, when using your scraps you make more scraps, but even these very small pieces do not go to waste.  Once my small scrap bag is full I take it to Shirley who is at the Attic Window Quilt Shop on Thursdays.  She uses these small pieces to fill beds for the animal shelter.

I hope you will join me in making fabric from your scraps on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  You can read about the class here.

NEW BOOKS NEW IDEAS

Did you see the new books at the Attic Window Quilt Shop when you were on the Jingle Bell Hop this past weekend?  I was tempted, but figured I best get busy and finish up some projects first.
Christmas is coming and it is time for me to start thinking about gift making. I made this table topper.  You can see the previous one I made and blogged about here. The pattern is from Becky Goldsmith's Hexie Garden Quilt.  This pattern is versatile.  You can make a table topper as I did above, or make a table runner, or make a big quilt.   These are fun to make and I made mine as gifts for friends.

SAVE THOSE SCRAPS AND USE THEM!

When I saw this Crumbly Leaves table topper in the Love of Quilting Magazine I knew I had to make it.  I keep and sort all my scraps by color.  I love applique so I save pieces of all sizes.  You never know when you might need it.  I had so much fun using my scraps to make this table topper that I asked Chris at the Attic Window Quilt Shop if I could teach a class on "making fabric" with scraps.
I hope you will join me in this fun class where I will show you how to use your scraps of all sizes.
For this class we will make this maple leaf, but I can see where you can use this technique for various patterns.  So, start saving those scraps.  As you can see above I grabbed a pile of my green scraps to make this leaf.  But I can see it in the golds and reds and yellows of autumn.  The class is Friday, Nov. 16 at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Please call the shop to register and get a class supply list.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW:
