WANT TO DO A LITTLE SEWING?

When I stopped in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop this past Monday, I found Rosa and her granddaughter Keira braiding strips from cut up old t-shirts.  Keira wanted to make a rug.
Rosa is in charge of the Scrappers Schoolhouse.  Let me tell you a little about this awesome group.  The women get together and sew pillowcases and bags for others in need.  Rosa said she gave the last batch of pillowcases to the Salvation Army and they were pleased as punch to get them.  Above are some of the pillowcases made during their sewing session last week.  Aren't they pretty!
Above, Rosa shows us the bag she made and will be donated with the pillowcases.  And Keira shows the pillowcase she made and has decided to donate it to charity too.
This is a close up of the bag that Rosa made.  This group is open to anyone who would like to come and sew and help out.   Patterns are available, we just ask that you donate fabric for your project.  The Scrapper's School House is held once a month.  Due to the shop move in July, the group probably won't meet again until August.  Watch for news of their next meeting and please feel free to come join us.

SPECIAL NOTICE:

HOW ABOUT SOME APPLIQUE?

The Applique Bee met last week at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above is the applique block that Lee Anne worked on.  I love this block!  It is from the Piece O Cake design that we've been working on.
Nancy shows us the quilt she finished.  It is for charity.  The last Friday of the month the Kids Quilts group meets to sew quilts for charity.
This is a close up of the center of Nancy's quilt.  Each quilt that is made has this center block.  Carol H. does the stitching for this center piece.  The group is looking for sewers.  The way I understand it, you will get a center piece with the stitched saying on it and the fabric to make a  quilt.  Stop by the shop for details.
Diana is working on an orange peel pincushion or sewing kit.  I'm not sure what it is going to be but am eager to see the finished project.
This is the block I worked on.  It is from a Piece O Cake design.
I've been putting all my blocks on the display board at the shop.  Can't wait to get this one completed.

CAN YOU YO YO?

Above, Pat A. shows us the adorable YoYo table topper (or it could be a wall hanging) that she made as a sample for the shop.
This is a close up of the project.  What a clever way to border your blocks.  Take a look at this the next time you stop in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

A special thank you to Diana for taking this picture and sending it to me.

MORE BACKGOUNDS FOR ROW BY ROW

Above is just part of the row that Chris designed for the Attic Window Quilt Shop's entry into the Row by Row Experience.  Kits are available for this design with various background fabrics.  Above is just one of those fabrics.
This is another example of one of the backgrounds being offered.  These are so darn cute, it is going to be difficult for me to decide!  You can read more about the Row by Row Experience here.
Jill stopped in at the shop on Wednesday to leave this quilt to be quilted.  Jilll does excellent work and I had to show it to you.  The pattern is Ophelia's Wedding Cake.  Jill made it for her Goddaughter.

A customer stopped in at the shop on Wednesday and I also had to take a picture of her stunning quilt.  Nancy, who made this quilt, said the pattern name is Mrs. Lincoln's Sampler by Lori Smith.
This is a closeup of one of the blocks.  I think these blocks are only six inches square.  Beautiful work!

MOD SQUAD GETS SCRAPPY

The Mod Squad met Wednesday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above is what was accomplished today...well, accomplished by those of us who wanted to do modern.  On the left is the block that Adrienne made and graciously wrote the directions, and gave us a demonstration on how to make this block.  It seems like other members were busy working on other projects and I was the only one who completed this month's block.  Mine is on the right.  Okay, I know it doesn't look exactly like Adrienne's but this is modern and we can do what we want. (grin).  A special thank you to Adrienne for preparing the block, writing the instructions, and giving us a demo.
After the demonstration, Adrienne worked on this scrappy project.  She said the pattern is Scrap Vortex and is from Crazy Mom's quilt along.
Judi A. showed us this little leather pouch she made.  Can you believe this...all that decoration on the pouch is porcupine quills.  Awesome.
You would think this was a Happy Scrappers meeting what with all the scrap projects.  Judi A. worked on this wonderful quilt today.  It is like a Jelly Roll quilt, but she is using her scraps to make it.  Fantastic.
Peggy F. worked on making this pinwheel quilt.  She said it is for her cottage.  She said the boarder fabric is blue with deck chairs on it.  Can't wait to see this one finished.
I'd like to introduce you to Keira who is Rosa's granddaughter.  Keira decided to join us this afternoon and worked right along with us.  Above she is busy making a pillowcase.
Ten-year-old Keira shows us her finished pillowcase.  She does a great job for being so young.  And she did it all by herself!

TAKE A CLASS WITH DIANA

Take Diana’s new Divalicious wallet class at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and you might end up with something like this!  Above is the wallet that Vickie S. made during the class.
This is a view of the wallet open.  Check out all those zippered pockets!  What a great wallet!
Doris is a brand new customer to the shop and she made this wallet. She is sooo happy with her finish.. She says that she never finishes anything in class...but she did today!
This view of the lovely black and white wallet shows the new gun metal frame.

The Tuesday Bee was also happening during the morning and Gerry finished this Jelly Roll Race.  She did her own straight line quilting.

I didn't make it to the shop in time, so Diana took these pictures for me.  Aren't they great!  Thank you Diana.

DO YOU LIKE PIECING?

Above is the block I just finished for the Modern Bee Hive that I belong to.  The pattern is Stacked Windmills and is in the book Modern Bee.  Annie is the Queen Bee this month.
As you may know, I’m not too fond of piecing, but I join these groups so I will be forced to increase my skills.  Above I did a lot of cutting.
Then a lot of trimming.
Then I carefully placed the blocks as shown in the picture in the book.  I’m sure this will be no surprise, but even after I placed everything as it should be, I still messed up and had to un-stitch on one row.  I guess I should be thankful it was only one row!  Anyway, I’m glad I made this block.  It does give me more self-confidence when I look at it.  In the first picture it looks like a seam is not straight, so I ran to my sewing room to check, thinking I would have to do more un-stitching.  Fortunately, it must have been the way I smoothed the block (I should have ironed it) that gave it that curved look.  I just hope Annie likes it.

When Cathy M. was at the Attic Window Quilt Shop last week she snapped this picture and sent it to me.  Above, is Pauline’s quilt.    Pauline has been working on this quilt for at least a year.  The pictures in the individual stars date back to late 1890's and go to current day.  She chose 30's fabric to frame them in 15" blocks.  Wow!  I wish I had seen this in person.
When Diana was at the shop she snapped a picture of this beautiful quilt that Vickie S. made.  Diana wrote that the pattern is Pinwheels on point with rail fence by Missouri Star Quilts.   Vickie used a jelly roll and additional fabric for the pinwheels.

A special thank you to Cathy and Diana for thinking of us and sending these pictures so we could see these lovely quilts!

DO YOU LEAD A HALF-FINISHED LIFE?

Spring is here and I decided to get back into my routine of taking a daily walk.  Along the walk, it occurred to me that last summer I would look for a small smooth round stone along the way and pick it up and hold it in my hand as a reminder of what I wanted to think about along my walk.  I was going to write a children’s story and each day I would pick a smooth round rock and rub my fingers over it as I walked and thought about what I would write that day.   So this day, this new spring day, I looked for a rock.  Above, is the rock I found.  It is not round.  It has sharp edges, and looks like it is half finished. Nature needs to smooth out the sharp edges, round it off, make it a whole rock, not a half rock.  Then it occurred to me, this stone reminds me of the way I live my life…half finished.
I must have two dozen half-finished quilts in my sewing room.  Above is block one of a quilt that I started some time ago.
This is the half-finished bag that I'm making from the leftover African fabrics I used in a quilt.

This is another unfinished block for a quilt started at the beginniing of the year.  After thinking about these unfinished projects and about the three dozen half finished stories in my computer, I've decided...I lead a half-finished life.  You would think someone of my advanced age would be closer to saying my life is nearly done, not half-finished.

How about you?  Do you lead a half-finished life?  What projects do you have sitting around waiting for you to finish them?  How many?  Have you ever wondered why you don’t finish them?  Are you bored with them?  Is it like Mary Lou Weidman says, the mystery is gone, you know the outcome, so why continue?

How can I get from half finished to nearly done?  Any suggestions?

A HAPPY HOUR GLASS DEMO

It is my understanding that Janalee gave a fabulous demonstration at the Happy Scrappers last Saturday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I'm so sorry I missed it.  However, I'm thrilled that Diana graciously sent me pictures to share with you.  Above Janalee shows the group how to make a Disappearing Hour Glass.
Janalee is relatively new to quilting and I'm so proud of her for doing this.  I have always heard that if you want to really know something, you should teach it.
Above,  Janalee smooths out the first steps in this block.

Here, she has the block squared up and gets ready to cut it all up.  That cutting is always the scary part for me.
Janalee makes the first cut in the block.
I'm not sure you can see it above, but she has made several cuts into the block in preparation for making a totally different block.

Now Janalee starts to reassemble the square.
As you can see, the one block has been cut into nine different squares.
Above, Janalee shows us her reassembled block into this beautiful star.  I have heard from some of those in attendance on Saturday that Janalee is an excellent teacher.

Janalee I want to thank you for answering my request that you demonstrate this technique.  And thank Diana for taking the pictures.  I understand that there was some frivolity going on during the day and everyone was having so much fun no more pictures were taken.   That is such a fun group I can only imagine what they were up to.  Hope to see everyone next month.  This is an open group and anyone is welcome to join us.  Just check the calendar for dates and times.
