BEES IN THE ATTIC MEET AT THE ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

Shirley was queen this month when the Bees In The Attic Bee Hive met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop today.  Above Queen Shirley shows off the blocks that the hive members made for her.
This is a close up of the blocks.  Shirley provided the fabrics and told us which pattern to use.  However, to make her quilt she will need a few more blocks so she is going to be a busy little bee.
Next month Peggy will be Queen of the hive.  She shows us which block she wants us to make.
This is a closeup of the block.  The pattern is Emblem and on page 22 of the Fat Quarter book.  Peggy distributed kits with the fabrics she wanted us to use and asks that any pieces of fabric that you do not use, including the small triangles you will be cutting off, to be returned to her.  She has a special use for them.  For those Hive members who could not attend today please pick up your kits at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
You may remember that last month we gave Queen Pat these heart blocks.  Above Pat shows us one of the two small quilts that she made with them.  So cute!

REMEMBER:  The hive does NOT meet during the month of December but will meet two times in January.  We will meet Wednesday, Jan. 3 and again on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

HAVE YOU TRIED A NEW RULER?

It was rainy and cold today; a great day for sewing.  Last week while at the Attic Window Quilt Shop I picked up the new Double Dresden ruler.  Naturally, I had to play with it.  Above is my first project.  I think it will make a cute little candle mat.  I love using my scraps and this is a great way to do that.
When I went to my sewing room this morning I had intended to bind the quilt that I just took off the frame.  However, after making the binding, I decided I didn't like it and wanted to use another fabric.  Naturally, I didn't have enough, so I put that project aside until I can get back to the Attic Window for more fabric.  After playing with the new ruler, I decided to finish up this little mug rug that I made earlier in the week using the Lazy Girl Ruler.  Again, using my scraps.
This is the back of the mug rug.  I love spiral quilting.

ATTENTION:  There has been some confusion about a couple of monthly meetings which usually take place on the fourth Wednesday of the month. This month that day is the day before Thanksgiving and a couple groups decided to make some changes.  Here are the changes:
  • The Bees In The Attic Bee Hive will NOT meet this coming Wednesday, but will meet instead on the following Wednesday, November 29 at 10 a.m.
  • The Quilt Block Cookbook BOM will not meet this month due to the holiday.  You are still to make a block this month and you can read about what blocks to makehere.

HAVE YOU EVER CHANGED DIRECTIONS?

Another Table Runner Finished!  When I saw the book The Joyful Stitcher at the Attic Window Quilt Shop I had to have it.  I love applique and although the pattern called for wool for the flowers and leaves I chose to make it all in cotton using my freezer paper method of applique.  I love how it turned out.
I also had a little fun trying out some free motion quilting.
Above is the back of the quilt.  I never have used a solid fabric on the back.  I find a busy fabric hides my quilting skills...or lack there of.  However, it was fun to see how this looked from the back.

DOES THIS BRING BACK MEMORIES?

Is anyone old enough to remember these?  I do.  When Chris, owner of the Attic Window Quilt Shop showed me this beautiful beaded purse it brought back a slew of memories.  Chris said that she got it from a friend whose Mother had received it as a graduation gift in 1940.  It was purchased at Herpolsheimer's (a local Grand Rapids department store) and was handmade in Belgium.
This is a closer look for you to see all the beads.  Those were the good old days, when we only needed a small bag to carry lipstick and a tissue.  Today I'm thankful that we have so many quilting patterns and can make the large purses or bags to carry all the stuff we have to haul around with us every day.  Stop by the Attic Window Quilt Shop and take a look at the bag samples and the patterns.  Or you can check out the calendar and sign up for a bag class that Lee Ann or Marilyn teach. You will be surprised at what you can do with their excellent instructions.

HOW ABOUT SOME EPP?

Well, this table runner is finally finished.  The dresdens are EPP.  I loved making them but I think I would have liked this one better if I had used a different background.  Live and learn.
This is a close up of one of the blocks so you can see how I quilted it.  The pattern is from the book Distinctive Dresdens by Katja Marek, published by The Patchwork Place.  This book is awesome.  There are templates and directions for 26 EPP blocks and 6 projects.  I think I will try one of the more complicated blocks next and make a pillow.  You can get the book at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO

Are you like most quilters who have participated in the Row by Row Experience over the years and have collected fabric plates (those pieces of fabric that are designed to resemble state license plates)?  They are 7.25 inches by 3.5 inches and are printed on cotton.  Marilyn shows us a clever way to use that piece of fabric.  Above you can see how she used a past Attic Window Quilt Shop fabric plate to make this little zipper pouch.
The pattern for this cute pouch is License Plate Zip Pouch and can be found at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  What a great idea!  Thanks Marilyn.

MORE IDEAS FROM HAPPY SCRAPPERS

The Happy Scrappers met Saturday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Marilyn showed us the new wall hanging that she had made.
This is a closeup of one of the blocks.  You can get the printed fabric at the shop.  Marilyn outlined the flowers and leaves in embroidery then used crayons to add color.  This is so pretty.  Not ready for another large project?  Then how about making a block and stretching it over canvas, making it into a picture for a wall.  It would make a nice Christmas gift for that special friend.
Vickie S. brought her Go Cutter in and she and Diana spent the day cutting a gazillioin circles of all sizes.  They are working on a Sue Spargo project.
Lee Anne continues working on her charity quilt using these beautiful fabrics.
And we were so happy to see Nancy back after her long absence due to major surgery.  Don't you just love her smile.

HAPPY SCRAPPERS MEET AT THE ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

We had a new quilter join us today when the Happy Scrappers met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Actually she's not new to quilting, but new to our group.  Above, C.J. shows us the table topper she worked on today.  The camera really doesn't do justice to the colors in this fabric.
This is a closeup of C.J.'s project.  Above, she is auditioning binding fabrics.  What a lovely table topper.
Vickie S. had several projects to share with us.  Above is a Christmas table topper.  How perfect for this time of year.
Then Vickie showed us this table runner.
Vickie has really been busy!  Above is a stunning quilt top.  Did you notice that these three projects are all made with the same line of fabric?  You can find them at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
Vickie also made this beautiful table runner.
Vickie said she found the patterns for several of her projects in this book:  Town Square.  Of course, you can get it at the shop too.
Cathy worked on this table runner that will be used for a relative's wedding.  How cute!
Cathy also showed us this adorable birthday place mat that she made for her grandson's first birthday!  So cute!  The pattern is at the shop.

I just now noticed I didn't take pictures of the project I worked on, and apparently I forgot to take pictures of Mary's and Janalee's projects.  Guess that is what happens when you're having so much fun talking and catching up on what everyone has been doing.  We meet again Saturday so I hope to get more pictures then.

WHAT DID YOU DO THIS WEEKEND?

I finally finished the applique table runner that I've been working on forever.    The pattern is from the book The Joyful Stitcher published by Anka's Treasures.  You can get it at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I think the 14 projects in this book are for wool, but I decidedd to use cotton and my freezer paper method of applique.  It was fun to make.  Now to figure out how I'm going to quilt it.

ATTENTION:  Happy Scrappers meets Wednesday and Saturday of this week.  Be sure to come as I have a new block to show you.  If you want to make it too, bring six 5 1/2" squares of fabric.  Use your scraps and make sure they are all different fabrics.  Hope to see you there!

On another note, when I stopped by the Attic Window Quilt Shop today the Beginning Quilting Class was in session and having a little show-n-tell.  Joan McKay showed us this darling table topper that her sister made for her.
Chris showed me this adorable Wool piece that Kathy B. made as a sample for the shop.  Chris said she is going to make it in cottons and may have a BOM of this pattern.
Vickie S. made the wonderful wall hanging for the shop.  It may be a little past Halloween but you can still get the pattern at the shop.  Chris thought it would be fun to put a Welcome banner over the Happy Halloween and use it all year long.  I can think of all kinds of sayings to put on that banner.  You could change it with the seasons.  Or you could say "Happy Sewing" and hang it in my sewing room.  (smile)
