FRIDAY FUN STUFF

I have a few things to show you today that I didn’t get a chance to show earlier this week.  I fell in love with this beautiful bag that Donna made.  She said she made it from a jelly roll and it was not easy.  She sewed strips together, turned them inside out, stuffed them with a stiffener, then wove the strips together to make the bag.  It is awesome!
Kathy made this wool table topper as a sample for the shop.  You have plenty of time to make it before the July 4th holiday!  Stop in and pick up the pattern, and pull wools from the wonderful selection at the shop.
This is the back of the wool table topper!
Cathy M. sent me this picture of her latest project.  I’m sorry I forgot the name of the bag, but I think Marilyn teaches a class on it at the shop.  At any rate, I’m sure you can get the pattern there.
This is the inside the bag.  It looks like it has lots of room inside.  Thanks Cathy for sharing.

HAVE YOU TRIED USING STRIPED FABRICS?

The Mod Squad met today at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Last month we decided we wanted to try something new and started collecting striped fabrics.  Today we used these fabrics to learn how to make quilt as you go blocks. Above, Bev shows us her first block.
This is Adrienne's first block.  Where others are using solid fabrics and stripes, Adrienne is making a stripes and dots quilt.
Peggy's block.
Judi's block.

Each participant was asked to make two blocks so she could learn how to attach them.  Above, are Donna's blocks before they are quilted.
And these are Donna's block after they are quilted and connected.

Peggy has her two blocks completed and ready to quilt before she can attach them together.
Diana's has two blocks completed.  One is quilted and the other one is ready to be quilted.
Adrienne has her two blocks quilted and attached.
This quilt looks rather drab after seeing all the beautiful and colorful blocks above.  What we did today was based on a quilt I finished last year. You can read more about it here. When I first saw The Quilting Edge blog I fell in love with all that Marianne does.  I followed her QAYG tutorial and made the quilt above.  Recently, I accidentally left my quilt at the shop and discovered others were interested in making one too.  So today I showed people what I learned at The Quilting Edge.  There are lots of beautiful projects to see on Marianne's blog, as well as many tutorials.  Take a look.  I hope that next month everyone will bring her blocks/quilts so we can see the progress being made.

BEV S. SHARES TECHNIQUE AT APPLIQUE BEE

When the Applique Bee met this  month at the Attic Window Quilt Shop, Bev S. showed members how to do back basting applique.  We all do various forms of applique, and it is always nice to learn another method.  Who knows, maybe we'll like that one better.  So last month when I asked Bev if she would show us how to do what she did, she generously said yes!  Bev said that she likes this method best because it is flexible and easier to fix a mistake.
First we learned how to draw our patterns onto the back of our fabric and to base the top and bottom fabrics together, stitching along the drawn lines.
Then Bev showed us how to stitch our applique pieces.  The basting thread is removed as we stitch along.  The holes that are left from the basting thread are used as our guide.  Above is Peggy's progress.
I have to show you this...note the pillow on Peggy's lap.  She uses the pillow to rest her hands and applique on as she stitches.  She said that way she has less strain on her neck.  Mmmmm...I may have to make me a pillow.
Cathy M. is making progress on her piece.  Where Peggy used small pieces of fabric for each heart, Cathy is using the same fabric for her entire piece.
Judi A. made a nearly perfect heart!
The other Judie (Judy with an  ie)  is making nice progress on her hearts!
We had some show and share too!  Judie showed us this darling table runner that she made for her grandson's wedding.
This is a look at all of the Love Laugh Live pieces together.  I bet this will be cherished for years to come.  Note the hearts in the center heart.  She said if they get bored they can play tic tac toe on the hearts.
Cathy M. finished her Calendar quilt for the month of April.  Don't you just love that fabric she used for her umbrella!
Cathy also showed us this table runner that she made and quilted herself.  The runner is from a kit.
Jane showed us this applique wall hanging that she recently finished.  It is called "little girls" and was a kit.  She said that Geri quilted it for her.
This is a close up of one of the blocks.
Not everyone chose to try this new applique technique.  Diana decided she would work on her hexagon pieces.  I took this picture to show you the size of those little hexagons.  Yikes!

It was a fun day and I thank Bev for demonstrating this applique technique and spending time with each of us as we struggled to make our samples.  You did a wonderful job Bev.  You made our day!

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL QUILT

This past weekend there was a Stitch-in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above from left to right, Catherine, Rosa, and Chris look at the quilt.   Diana sent took these pictures and sent them to me.  Catherine stopped by the shop with this beautiful quilt that she had just quilted for a customer.
This is a closeup of her work.  Catherine Martin is a professional long arm quilter.  The name of her business is Quilten Bee Express.  You may contact her at 616-363-0703.  You can see more of her work in a post I did here

Thank you Diana for the pictures!

DON'T FORGET:  The Applique Bee meets Tuesday afternoon and the Mod Squad (Modern Bee) meets all day Wednesday at the shop.  Don't forget to bring your supplies to participate in the demos.  Each Bee will have a special technique demonstrated.  Hope to see you there.

IN REMEMBERANCE

Above, is the third and final block of In Remembrance, the quilt from the  El Camino Real book by Nancy and Oliver Rink.  I posted the previous blocks here and here.  I love this quilt with all the applique flowers and the many borders.  The book is available at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
However, I have decided not to make the full quilt.  Instead, I am going to make these three blocks into a bed runner.  Above, I have attached the three blocks, and added and inner border.  Now I need to spend time…lots of time, deciding how I’m going to place the flowers on the outside border.  So, that’s what I’ll be doing this holiday weekend.  What about you?  Got any plans?

If you don’t have any plans, you might want to stop in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and pick up some new fabric  Also, why not bring something to work on and spend some time sewing with your quilting friends as there is a Stitch-In on Friday and Saturday.

REDWORK IS NICE TO HAVE AROUND

Diana sent me a couple pictures that she recently took while at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I think there was a Stitch-In last week.  Above, Sharon R. shows us her finished embroidered snowmen quilt top.  Diana said no one knew the name of the pattern but that Sharon had purchased it at the shop in 2009.
Nancy shows us her embroidered teacup quilt top.  I’m not sure of the name of this pattern is either.  I love both of these quilts.  Redwork is such a nice pick-up project.

Diana also said that there was going to be another Stitch-In this coming Friday and Saturday.  Hope to see you there!

JUDI'S LONE STAR SWIRL ALMOST FINISHED

Judi A. sent me this picture of her beautiful Lone Star Swirl quilt.  We began working on these a couple months ago at our Happy Scrapper’s Bee.  It looks like Judi is all finished and has it layered and pinned, ready to quilt!  This is absolutely stunning, Judi.  Thanks for sharing it with us!

DOLLS AND TRAVELING

Since I have been a bit under the weather lately, my lovely quilting friends have been sending me pictures of what is happening at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above, Maggie is participating in the Doll Bee.  I love these little dolls and wish I had the patience to make one.  Julie L. teaches the class and runs the bee.  She is a fantastic teacher and if you are interested in making one of these dolls you should stop by and join her Bee any Thursday to see what is going on.  You might want to join one of Julie’s doll making classes. You can check the calendar on the sidebar for classes/Bees and times.
Thanks, Julie for sending me the picture.

SOMETHING TO TRAVEL ABOUT:  Are you traveling this summer?  Before you get on the road be sure and check the Row By Row website.  This is a new kind of shop hop.  There are no fees and no passports required, but you can visit the shops all summer long.  You simply visit any of the participating shops and receive a free pattern, and if desired, you can participate in a contest where you may win a great prize.  It tells all about the experience on the website.  Simply, click on the "Start Here" tab, and then click on the license plates of the states you are visiting to see which shops are participating.  NOTICE:  The Attic Window Quilt Shop is participating, so be sure and stop by!

PROGRESS IS BEING MADE!

The Happy Scrappers met again this past Wednesday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Unfortunately, I was a bit under the weather and couldn’t attend, so good friend Cathy M. took pictures and sent them to me.  Above Dorothy Hill shows this beautiful quilt.  In case you ever wonder, we do make progress.  I remember seeing the individual blocks as Dorothy worked on them last month.  I had no idea they would make such a stunning quilt.
It looks like Diana is making progress on these darling blocks I showed you earlier in the week.
Catherine is making progress on her quilt too.  I'm looking forward to seeing the finished quilt.  I’m liking the pattern.

Above, cousins Lee Ann and Joyce are working on the same quilt.  However, they are using different color schemes.  The pattern is the Jelly Bean Dreamin’ from the summer edition of Quilt World.
Judi's Swirling Lone Star quilt is still making progress.  It looks like she is adding the NYB crowns.  Stunning.

Again, a very special thank you to Cathy for taking these great pictures. I hated not being able to spend time with this wonderful group of women.

NEED A NEW BAG FOR SUMMER TRAVEL?

This is the Bohemian Carpet Bag that Marilyn made as a sample for the class she is teaching at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  This spacious bag has a roomy interior and is perfect for that weekend trip.  It has an interior key fob and exterior zippered phone pocket, which makes it great for traveling.  It looks complicated, but I understand it is exceptionally easy to make.  Call the shop for class details and supply list.  Marilyn likes you to have your pieces cut before class so you will be ready to get down to business when you arrive.
Marilyn also made this Curling Iron Cozy by Sweet and Simple Sewing.  You could make this of the same fabrics, or coordinating fabrics and it would look great tucked into your new bag.

ON ANOTHER NOTE:   I like this rainbow all-sort pillow that Samilia’s Mum made.  Great tutorial.

DANCING WITH THE HAPPY SCRAPPERS

The Happy Scrappers met last Saturday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop, so I have lots to show you today.  Above is one block of Janalee's paper pieced quilt.
This is the entire quilt.  Janalee is new to quilting and I am amazed at the fantastic job she is doing.
She was excited about these "crumb" pieces she made during a recent Bee.  I call it making fabric and love what she has done with it.  I bet she will become addicted at this as it is a wonderful way to use those scraps.
Adrienne showed us this pin catcher that she made.  She added batting to this one so she could use it as a pincushion as well.  How clever!
Diana was busy making these blocks.  I love these fabrics and can't wait to see it completed.
Above, Cathy is laying out her Lone Star Spiral, testing where the New York Beauties should go.  This is going to be a stunning quilt!
Due to recent surgery, Adrienne was still doing hand sewing and making this beautiful quilt.  I think the pattern is Robbing Peter to Pay Paul.  I love her colors.
Judi was busy working on her applique blocks.  She is sewing them on the machine. I'm sorry but I forget the name of the pattern she is using.
We are not all work.  A little fun was going on too.  When the song "Happy" came on the radio I was able to snap a picture of Lee Ann, Chris, and Peggy dancing.  What fun.
