BEE HIVE AND COOKBOOK BOM AT ATTIC WINDOW

Wednesday was a busy morning at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  First, the Bees In The Attic Bee Hive met.  Above is Queen Bee for this month, Cheryl.

Last month Cheryl gave us instructions and fabrics to make these blocks for her.

Above is a closeup of Cheryl's blocks.  That one little odd square on the left is a signature block.  I think this is going to make a lovely quilt.
Next month Lee Anne is Queen Bee and she has asked us to make this block.  Can't wait to see this quilt.
Next up, the Quilt Block Cookbook BOM group met.  Cathy explained the BOM and went over the book by Amy Gibson that we will be using.  Above is a sample block that everyone will make from the kits distributed today.
Above, Cathy is explaining things to the group.

Chris gives a demonstration on using the Creative Grids flying geese ruler.

We had some show-n-tell too.  Above, Shirley shows us her latest bag.  She used the Beach Bag kit that is available at the shop.  Shirley said this is her first attempt at applique.  What a great job she did!  The UCHS is for Unity Christian High School where her grandson plays football.  Shirley appliqued his jersey number 21 on the back of the bag, which she carries to all his ball games. Great job Shirley!
Tammy Huff finished her Snow Globes quilt.  the pattern is by Crab Apple Hill.
This is a closeup of her adorable snow globe.  Wonderful!!

ART PRIZE IN GRAND RAPIDS

My daughter came in to town today and we spent five hours visiting Art Prize.  I thought I'd show you some pictures of this awesome event.  Above is Mason The Tortoise, a collection of scrap metal.

This is the Flower Power Elephant.

The Path - one of three sculptures that represent the artist's interpretation of a spiritual voyage.

Moan, a sculpture made of crochet flax cord then attached to a steel frame.

Turning Away made entirely of 9,000 steel decking screws.

 We had music too!
Above is Emoh: Sculpture/time capsule and temporary home. It is made of debris from demolished houses.  It represents our earth and backward system regarding homelessness, vacancy and the fragile environment.   The man in the front is making the inside of this sculpture his home during the Art Prize event.
Care were painted.  I don't know how true it is, but someone told me that the person who gets the most votes on the painting done on one of these cars, gets a free car!

Over the past year the artist and six kids painted over 1,000 rocks.  They were painted in matching pairs.  Half of the pairs are on display at the Children's Museum.  The matching half was hidden all over Grand Rapids.  When you walk around Grand Rapids and see one of those rocks, you are to take a picture of it and share it on social media with the #RockAroundGR.  What a cute idea!

This piece touched my heart.  It is PTS by Cassandra Burgess.

This is called Wounded Warrior and these toy green army men made the full size wheel chair below.
The Wounded Warrior made entirely out of toy green army men.

This is The Last Whistle.  The iconic blue collar worker of our American history, whose significant contributions to the fabric of our society and the strength of our economy, is very likely part of your ancestry.
There was also art made entirely of LEGO toy pieces.

Birth of an Idea - a radial mandala design using quilled paper.

There was a little humor too.  Vincent van Gogh Observed - four humorous fictions about the artist.

I thought this a good way to end the day.  Flushed IBD - Let's Find a Cure!

The above pictures represent a very small part of Art Prize.  This event is large and takes a lot more time than we had to see everything. It is an event I look forward to each year.

QUILT BLOCK COOKBOOK BOM

Members of the Monday Evening group of the Block Cookbook BOM met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  This was our first meeting and above is a picture of the Criss Cross Applesauce Block that we will be making this month.  All blocks will come from Amy Gibson's The Quilt Block Cookbook.
This block is an easy one, made with a square, half square triangles and flying geese.  Above, we watch as Chris gives us a demonstration on how to use a special ruler.

 Questions were asked and answered.

We even watched a video on various ways to use the ruler.

For those of you who missed our meeting on Monday, feel free to come to the day time meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

YOU CAN DO LOTS WITH QAYG

Marilyn and I had a Quilt As You Go one-on-one Friday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop. Marilyn said she had a bunch of homespun fabrics she wanted to use, so she decided to make her quilt with those.  During our session she made two blocks, learned how to attach them to each other. and quilted them.  She did a wonderful job and I can't wait to see the finished quilt.
Above is a closeup of one of her blocks.  There are a multitude of ways to quilt these blocks and Marilyn chose to use the straight line method.  That is my favorite.
While Marilyn made her blocks, I decided to use up some of my black and white scraps and made the above mug rug.
I've decided to use this base and applique this bright flower on it.  Haven't decided what to use for binding.  You can learn my Freezer Paper Applique method and make a mug rug with me on Wednesday, September 28, from 2 - 3 p.m.  Call the shop to register and get a supply list.

MORE FINISHES BY MISTI

When recently talking to Misti (co-worker) I learned that her quilt was finished.  Naturally I had to see it and take a picture to show you.  Isn't it lovely!  Misti said it is a Christmas gift and I'm not telling who she is giving it to.

This closeup shows you the adorable kitten fabrics she used in the quilt.  As I recall, she said the quilt came as a kit.

But the kit did not include this beautiful Moda fabric that Misti used on the back of her quilt.  She actually has two quilts in one!

Misti also showed me this table topper, table runner, and mug rug that she recently completed.

This is a closeup of one of the blocks.  Misti said that the Primitive Gardens pattern was for a quilt.  However, during a recent move, the pattern was misplaced and Misti decided to make the blocks that she had finished into these other items instead.  Pretty clever, don't you think?

Thanks Misti for sharing your lovely work with us.

IT'S PERSONAL

Today I want to show you the PJs I made for my great grandson.  I didn't have a pattern, so I took his clothes and traced a pattern.  Worked well on the shorts, but I had a little trouble with the top.  The point is, he picked out the fabric himself and told me what to make with each piece.  I love it when that happens.  Isn't he one handsome dude!

I wanted to show you this too.  It has been a wonderful growing season here in Michigan.  This Sweet Autumn Myrtle  Clematis is loaded with blooms.  I love how it's sweet fragrance drifts through my back yard.  I read recently that Autumn shows us that there is beauty in letting go.
