MOVING ALONG WITH THE LONE STAR SWIRL

The Happy Scrapers recently met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Our Teacher Vickie had lots to show us to help us move further along in making our Lone Star Swirl.  Above is the black/yellow quilt that she put together.  You probably saw the mockup of this quilt last month. 

She also put this one together from the mockup you saw last month. 

I wanted to show you the above so you can see the difference between the mockup and the actual quilt.  The star on the left is made up of the actual diamonds that will go into the quilt.  On the right is the mockup.

This is interesting too.  The quilt on the left is the actual diamonds that will go into the quilt.  The mockup is on the right.  Notice in this quilt, the swirl is going a different direction from the mockup.  That was accomplished by placing the diamonds in a different order when you put them together.

Above, Cathy watches as Vickie demonstrates how to put the New York Beauty block together.

I worked all day and managed to get one NYB arch put together.  This really takes a lot more thought than I am used to. 

Diana made one also.  I love her fabrics!

The day wasn’t all work!  We had some show-n-share too.  Above Catherine shows us this beautiful star quilt that she made using the Tri-Recs ruler. 

Catherine also showed us this darling bird appliqué that she was working on.  She said it is a thank you gift for a friend.


Nancy showed us these lovely blocks that she was working on.  The pattern is Strip Twist by G.E. Designs.

YOU CAN MAKE THIS BRIGHT BLOCK

I love this block.  It is called the Lone Starburst and is paper pieced.  You can find the free pattern on the Six White Horses blog.  It took a while to make, but it was worth the time involved.  Just go slow, position your pieces carefully, and you’ll be as pleased as I am.  I thought it would look nice with the last paper pieced block I made and blogged about here.   Buffie was right.  She has made a paper piecer out of me.  I love bright colors and am not very good at traditional piecing.  Paper piecing makes me look like I’m really good at it.  The lines are straight and so far things have matched and the blocks are square!  Whoopie!
