PAPER PIECERS HAVE A FUN DAY

The Paper Piecing Bee met recently at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Above is the beautiful quilt that Marilyn is working on.  The pattern is Grandmother's Jumping Jacks. What a wonderful way to use those leftover fabrics.  It's beautiful too!
Sue was working on this intricate piece.  The pattern is Technicolor Snowflake.  Sue is so organized.  She had all those little pieces cut to size and clipped together so all she had to do was sit and sew.

Charity was working on a pretty pattern but I forgot to get the name of the book and pattern.  I'll try to get it next month. I saw the pattern and it is stunning.
Miriam is working on this pattern.  Apparently I didn't get the name of this stunning pattern either.  It is going to be beautiful.
Cathy showed us her latest finish.  The pattern is Diamond Divide.  So pretty.
Carol P. showed us her latest finish.  It is so pretty.  She said she made it for a friend.  Lucky friend!
This is what I accomplished that day.  I'm using up my scraps.  Not sure how I will make a quilt out of them just yet.  We'll see how many I make and if I add sashing or star points.   Janalee was there too working on a new project which she decided not a good place to start.  She said maybe she would make blocks like mine.  The tablet full of this preprinted pattern is for sale at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

HAVE YOU TRIED PAPER PIECING

I've been under the weather this past week and didn't make it to the Happy Scrappers meeting at the Attic Window Quilt Shop last week.  I had hoped someone would send me some pictures but was told that everyone was having such a good time that they forgot about taking pictures.  However, Carol P. sent me a couple pictures of her recent paper piecing projects.  She said that she finished the tree wall hanger for the back door.
She also finished these paper pieced blocks.  Not sure what she plans to do with them, but I'm thinking they would make fun hot pads.  Thanks, Carol, for sharing with us.

NEW PROJECTS AND MORE GOOFS

Another goof...by me.  I totally forgot to post this picture of the paper pieced lion that Cathy did.  It was part of her show-n-tell when the Paper Piecing Bee met recently at the Attic Window Quilt Shop. It is really awesome.
Misti sent me a picture of her latest quilt.  I love the soft colors.  She said that she made this as a wedding gift for her daughter who is getting married next week.  What a lovely gift.  Thanks for sharing, Misti.  Enjoy the wedding.
When recently at the Attic Window Quilt Shop I saw this bag on display.  Marilyn made it and you are going to love it.

It has lots of pockets and is so cute!
Another goof. Remember this picture?  When I walked into the Attic Window Quilt Shop the other day, I was greeted with, "There she is, the city girl."  Yes, so?  Everyone started laughing.  You will have to understand that the shop is near a rural area and lots of women and men who come into the shop are familiar with "farm" things.  I guess they could tell I was a city gal because I didn't know the difference between a bail of hay and a bail of straw.  When I posted the picture with the story about the Country Fair  Barn Quilt Road Tour, I said it was a bail of hay.  Wrong!  It was a bail of straw.  When I asked how one would tell the difference, I was told that hay is green and straw is yellow.  Well, you learn something new every day!

Another goof:  I posted the times wrong for the Sunday Stitch-In.  Sunday, September 29th, the Stitch-In is from 12 noon to 5 p.m.  I think I need to work more on that Brain thing that I talked about in yesterday's post.

BUSY DAY AT THE ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

It was a busy day at the Attic Window Quilt Shop today.  The Paper Piecing Bee had its first meeting, Marilyn was teaching a purse class, and Barb Johnson (above) stopped by and graciously showed us her quilt.  It is stunning!
Barb said that the pattern was for a table runner but she decided to make it into a quilt and will be giving it as a wedding present to her best friend's son. "They like bright colors," she said.
This is a closeup of the pretty back.  Thanks Barb for sharing.
The Paper Piecing Bee also had some Show-n-Tell.  Above, Charity (left), and Cathy (right) show us their paper pieced Christmas trees.  Awesome!
Above, Marilyn, who was teaching another class, helps Carol P. with her paper piecing.
And I have to show you what Shirley and Mary P. did when taking the purse class from Marilyn.  They are not finished yet but these purses are going to be fantastic.
This is another view of Shirley's purse (front) and Mary's purse (back).  Great job ladies!

It was a fun day at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I hear various things about working your brain to keep it young and active.  I think my brain got a workout today as I tried to remember how I made my paper pieced block.  Hopefully I can get it squared up and show it to you tomorrow. I've heard that people of age should get lots of socialization to keep your brain in shape.  I'm sure all the fun I had socializing today did wonders for my brain.  Come to the quilt shop; it will keep you young.

LOOK WHAT I FOUND

I was going through things to get ready for the first meeting of the Paper Piecing Bee, which is Wednesday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and came across these New York Beauty blocks.  They are old.  These were done by hand when I first started quilting.  I had no idea how to paper piece on a sewing machine.  Besides, I could hand stitch them as I sat with my mother.
I didn't even use paper.  I don't know what this is.  I purchased a roll of it at a sewing expo back when I still made my clothes.  Can't even remember why.  I think you are supposed to make patterns with it.  Anyway, it works and I don't have to tear away paper.
Here are the five blocks I had made.  Not sure why I used those fabrics either.  They seem a little busy for my taste today.  Maybe I'll make some more when I attend the Bee at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I have some other ideas to share with everyone, and I hope you will bring your ideas and sew-n-tell too.  We start at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25.  Hope to see you there.

The Charming Scrappy Day (lunch included) at theAttic Window Quilt Shop  will be held on Saturday, August 17th (not on the 10th as I previously posted).  Bring those charm packs, or your 5" scraps, or best of all, buy new charm packs at the shop and get sewing.  Chris will show you what to do with them.  I promise you, you are going to like this pattern.  Call the shop to register so she will know how many to plan for lunch!
I'm glad that it is on the 17th since I will be able to attend.  Hope to see you all there!
PS:  I made this little paper piecing block while trying to calm my nerves after learning of my mistake.  I love paper piecing.

WHAT IS DIFFICULT ABOUT PAPER PIECING?

Not much accomplished this weekend.  I finally completed this block.  Rolling Squares from the book Vintage Quilt Revival.  Most of the projects in this book are paper pieced.  I thought making this block would be a snap since you just sew on the lines.  Not!  I think I took the block apart a dozen time and started over.  First time the green squares were too large.  Then the blue flying geese were too small.  Ugh!  I printed at 100%, then at 101%, then at 102%.  I ended up making very small seams to achieve the 12 1/2" unfinished square.  I just hope my bee queen likes the colors I used.  Do you ever have this problem when paper piecing?

A LITTLE PAPER PIECING

Recently I joined the Stitchery Dickory Dock Sugar Block Club.  Above is my first block.  It is paper pieced and I must say that I liked making this paper pieced block much better than I did my last one.  As you may know, I'm not much of a piecer and making these blocks helps me to increase my skills.  It's not too late to make these blocks.  Not all of them are paper pieced.

NOTE:
  • The Bees In The Attic is being formed.  It is a new Bee Hive at the shop.  We could still use another member to make it an even dozen.  Call the shop to sign up and find out about the group.  Our next meeting is May 25.  This is only a one hour meeting, but you can stay and sew with us if you like.

A PAPER PIECING TIP

I made this block for the queen of a Bee Hive that I belong to.  The pattern is Cross Point Quilt from the book Vintage Quilt Revival.  I love how the block turned out.  In fact, I was excited when I learned that I would be paper piecing this block because then I knew all I had to do was just stay on the lines as I sewed and the block would turn out to be perfect.  NOT!  The problem is, the block was supposed to end up at 12 1/2" unfinished.  Mine is ended up as a solid 12" block unfinished.  HOT TIP!  Be sure and check your guide when printing off the paper pattern.  You know, that little line on the pattern that looks like this |____| = 1".   I now understand that you should measure carefully to see that that line actually is one inch long before you print off any thing else and especially before you start to sew.  I didn't do that, assuming that I'd never had any problem before with my blocks printing off the correct size.  Well, you know what they say about people who assume.  Anyway, I have asked the Queen to send me a couple more of those light blue strips, then I can remake this block so it will end up the correct size.  Oh, joy!

NOTE:

DO YOU LIKE PAPER PIECING?

I haven't been able to do much quilting lately what with gardening, graduation ceremonies, and a ceremony when my grandson got his Eagle Scout award.  However, I do want to show you this block.  I love paper piecing and found this block called Ceiling Tiles in the book Paper Pieced Modern by Amy Garro.  I particularly like it because it is made with scraps.  I think I'll be making more of these.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

HAPPY SCRAPPERS MEET AND HAVE TWO TUTORIALS

The Happy Scrappers met Saturday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  It was a fantastic, fun-filled and educational day.  I’ll show you some pictures.  Above Rosa shows us her new Quilting Buddy.  She said he sits on her computer and stares at her (like it's saying “get to work.”)  He will kiss her (we all need that now and then), and he helps her deal with her frustration because when she gets frustrated she can just scream and throw him across the room.  Now I ask you, what woman doesn’t need a quilting buddy like that?
We had a “Future Quilter Of America” with us Saturday.  This is Makayla.  She is only 4 ½ years old and loves to quilt.  She showed me some squares that she had made with her proud grandma Yvonne, the woman on the left smiling from ear to ear.  I’m so glad Makayla joined us.  I love to see this kind of addiction being passed on to future generations.
Nancy shows us her newest project.  I love the fabrics she is using.  She is using the storm at sea pattern.
Chris (shop owner) gave us a wonderful short class and demonstration on paper piecing.  Above she had lots of samples to show us as well as tools and handwritten instructions.  How wonderful of her to do this.  I imagine over the past months she has watched us struggle with paper piecing and wonder if she thought: I need to give them some instructions and techniques and tools to make things easier.  And she sure did!
She told us about Wash Away, a product she uses when she paper pieces.  You never have to tear away the paper, as you just wash it away!
She also uses these various rulers.
This small ruler has a 3/8” mark and she uses it to draw her pattern.
And she uses this same ruler to mark the 3/8” space around the pattern.  I have aways used a quarter inch but Chris says that making the wider border around each piece gives you lots of room for error.  Trust me, I tried it and it really works!
Above, Chris shows us a pile of patterns made out of freezer paper and ironed onto the fabric, trimmed and ready to sew.
Chris also used the Add A Quarter ruler to trim the pieces once sewn.  She also showed us a “creasing” technique that helps place the piece to be attached correctly.  I’m sorry I don’t have a picture of that and find it difficult to explain.  If you are really interested you could take a Paper Piecing Class from Chris.  Just call the shop to find out when the next one is.
Above Chris shows us her cutting technique and the “creasing” technique.
Here she shows us how to stitch the pieces together and also tells us about basting the completed square around the edges.  All in all it was a wonderful and informative demo and I can’t thank her enough.  I came home and that evening made so many more pieces completed by using Chris’s techniques.
Above, Janalee shows us her very first paper pieced block.  Looking good!  I bet she’ll have lots of fun with her new project now that she knows the ins and outs of paper piecing.
Here is just half of Marcie’s stack of paper pieced blocks on the ironing board waiting to be ironed.
Then, when Judy F. wondered if anyone remembered how last month Stephanie sewed that zipper on her bag, Paula said she did and gave us a quick demo.  Aren't quilters the best, so willing to share their talents!
Paula said you just take any width of fabric you want to use and fold it in half and sew it to each side of the zipper.
Above, Paula shows us how her bag is shaping up.  Paula you are so nice to share your skills with us.  Thank you so much!

It was a wonderful day and I hope everyone will come to Happy Scrappers on Wednesday.  I know a good many of you will be at AQS but if you  get bored with the show, stop by the shop and sew with us.

DON’T FORGET:
  • Happy Scrappers meets Wednesday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
  • AQS Quilt Week is the week of August 14-17 at DeVos Place Convention Center.  The Attic Window will have a vendor booth, so be sure and stop by.
ON ANOTHER NOTE:  I’m not ready to think about it, so I’ll close my eyes when I tell you that Christmas is just around the corner.  Ivory Spring has a cute free Tied With a Bow pattern that will be perfect for that time of year.

A PAPER PIECED BLOCK

I love trying new blocks.  This one is paper pieced.  It is the Cartwheel Block from Freshly Pieced.  Wouldn’t this make a lovely quilt?  My intention was to use a mix of scraps, but fell in love with the green and oranges and had to use those.  Wonder what it would look like with each blade a different fabric?  This block will be fun to try several different ways.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday.

A VERY EASY PAPER PIECED BLOCK

I played this weekend and had to show you these two blocks.  The pattern is Dresden Stars and is in a recent issue of Quilt Magazine.  It is a paper pieced pattern with only two stitching lines on each square of paper.  What could be easier?  I made the above block first.  The only thing I was concerned about was that the center strip calls for a seven inch strip of fabric.  Well, I have lots of scraps and most are smaller than seven inches.
So I decided to “make” fabric for that center strip.  This is the block I made using small scraps.  I love making fabric and using those small “unusable” leftover pieces, however, I didn’t like this block as well as I did the first one.  I think I’ll dig out all my flowery fabrics and use them.  This pattern reminds me a little of the tea leaf quilt I recently finished, so I can visualize how it will look using those same fabrics.

Some of the Happy Scrappers were asking about another project.  What do you think about this one?  We could have fun as we did when we exchanged fabrics for the tea leaves.
