I'd like to introduce you to Spencer. This past Sunday I drove to my son’s house for a birthday party for one of my grandsons. I took this opportunity to give Spencer his quilt. If you are new to this blog, the quilt is the one I made during the Modern Monday Quilt Along. Spencer turned 17 last month, but I didn’t have the quilt finished then. Isn’t he handsome!
Here he is as he pulls the quilt out of the bag and opens it. He looks happy.
And here he is with it wrapped around him. I hope it keeps him warm and that he thinks of his old Nana once in a while when he snuggles under it.
Above, Spencer looks over all the various blocks. He is such a good kid with a good heart. Did you notice his hair? It is in a pony tail. For the past year he has been letting it grow with plans of donating it to Locks of Love. He told me he hopes it is long enough for the cut by the time school is out. Maybe I can get a picture when it happens! Sort of like the big reveal. ;o)
On Another Note: Did you know that Gen X Quilters has a Modern BOM? You can see the tutorials for January and February here. Looks interesting.
Until next time,
♥

STAMP OUT DISEASE AND REPLACE IT WITH LOVE AND BEAUTY
In October of 2012 I posted about this block that I had made for the Modern Monday Quilt Along. I said that I felt it too feminine for my quilt as I was making it for my 16 year old grandson and mentioned that I didn’t know what I would do with the block. Michelle Bilyeu of With Heart and Hands left this comment on the blog: I love this little posy! Can you put into a little quilt for AAQI and if you don't have time..mail it to me and I'll make a quilt and donate it with a heads up for your work!
Since I had no idea what to do with the block, I sent it and a few scraps to Michelle and she turned that plain block into this stunning little quilt. Michele is a very special lady and I want to share her recent eMail to me as it tells about her and the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative. Below is the letter she sent to me.
As a quilter, an online blogger, and as the founder of my own group of online quilters/bloggers the Liberated Quilting Challenge Group, I invited online quilters and bloggers to help me raise money for Alzheimer's research funding by supporting the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative. AAQI, as it is known, was begun by Ami Simms in January of 2006, when she realized that her own mother had Alzheimer's Disease and that she needed a way to make a difference in her mother's life, and her own life, by doing something to help put an end to this horrible and challenging disease. What began as a small grassroots effort grew in just 8 years to become an award winning organization that has already raised more than $900,000 by the sale and auction of small format quilts. We are planning on reaching our ONE MILLION DOLLAR goal by the end of 2013, and so 2013 will be our final year of running and using AAQI a a funding organization.
I began my own little group, Liberated Quilting Challenge Group to raise money for AAQI, in January 2010. January was also the month, that I went up to my childhood home on Douglas Island, near Juneau, Alaska to help my father take care of my mother, who was already suffering from advanced Alzheimer's Disease. Little did I know, that I would slip and fall on the worse black ice in Juneau, Alaska's history within three days of my arrival there, and break my arm in two places, dislocate 3 bones, and require immediate surgery. With a broken and healing arm, I continue to care for my mom, cook and clean their house, give insulin shots, Alzheimer's medications, and believe it or not..use a sewing machine with one hand to sew. And I continued to create my challenge group for AAQI, invite other quilters to join me, and to do all of the necessary data work with one arm and hand and one bit of an extra elbow!
I knew if I could do all of that, I could continue to run my challenge group, with a dial up connection computer from Alaska, that I could do just about anything! My little group of about 40 quilters have created and donated over 500 quilts to AAQI since 2010 and raised a lot of money for this cause in that process. I am deeply committed to quilting for this cause, as 15 members of my immediate family have suffered from this horrible disease......and now only my 87 year old mother is still alive, and still being cared for by all of us grown children, by ourselves, in her home.
To say, that this cause is important to me personally, is a understatement! So, I am delighted that you not only donated some fabric to my cause, but asked me to let you know when my small format art quilt was completed and up for sale on the AAQI website.
My completed small format art quilt. #12,976 Attic Window Posy ...named in honor of all of you....was priced by AAQI founder and directer, Ami Simms, at $65.00. My quilts have gone for as high as $175.....all this small size ...so it is a fair price and of course...all profits go to fund Alzheimer's research!!
Thanks again, for helping this cause by the donation of the fabrics for this quilt. I just loved sewing with them and truly do love how it turned out. It became one of my absolute favorites of the over 50 quilts that I have personally donated to date! If you check out the link to the quilt's own little web page at AAQI, you will notice that I dedicated it to you and all of the Attic Window Quilt Shop quilters!
I would just dearly love it if one of your quilters could purchase, and own it, as that would give it an especially dear home!
With Heart and Hands
Michele Bilyeu
Thank you Michele for making this beautiful quilt. You are a very talented lady with a big heart. Thank you too for mentioning me and the Attic Window in your dedication. I wish you and AAQI the best of luck in selling this quilt and pray that you reach your ONE MILLION DOLLAR goal. " May we work together to stamp out Alzheimer’s disease and replace it with the love, generosity, and the creativity of the quilting arts."
Until next time,

MODERN MONDAY QUILT IS FINISHED!
Today when I went to visit my Mom she said, “I’m sick of this snow. It’s supposed to be summer. I’m going to call that weatherman and complain.”
I know how she feels, however, not realizing that complaining would do any good, I took advantage of the snowy weather and sewed! Above is my latest finish.
I love how this quilt turned out. These Modern Monday blocks were fun to make and I thank Jennifer of 42 Quilts for hosting the sew along. I understand Lynn at Alamosa Quilter has her blocks finished and will be posting a picture today so be sure and stop by.
Here it is when I first started the quilting. It sat on the frame for days while I tried to decide what design to use. Finally, frustrated with all our snow, I decided to just do it, and started doing my version of what Angela Walters (her book is Free-Motion Quilting) calls a Geometric All Over. I think the sharp angles compliment the modern design.
This is the backing I used. A friend at the Attic Window Quilt Shop gave me several of these kitties, saying I’d know what to do with them. When thinking about a quilt label, I decided to use one of the kitties and just printed my Grandson’s name and the year on it. I figured if he took it to college with him, his friends might laugh at “Love, Nana.”
On Another Note: The Needless Excellency has a great tutorial for making a spiked Dresden plate.
Until next time,

MODERN MONDAY BLOCKS AND A QUESTION - WHY?
Happy Monday everyone! I hope you had a great weekend. I got some sewing done and I’d like to tell you about it and ask a question. I finally decided to tackle the Modern Monday Quilt Along quilt and put the blocks together. I had hoped to do something different, but in the end I sashed each block and put them together in rows. I chose three different gray fabrics for the sashings. So I started out sashing these 21 blocks in a dark gray.
Then I sashed another 21 in a lighter gray fabric.
Then I sashed the rest of the blocks in this light gray fabric! Whew! I was exhausted when I completed all that cutting, sewing and pressing!
Then I placed the blocks on the family room carpet to get an idea of where I wanted them and gathered them together in marked rows. That’s Mo helping in the background. Why do cats think it is their duty to lay on any piece of fabric you place on the floor? She’s probably not too happy at me right now because I shooed her away.
Then, there was MORE cutting and pressing and stitching!!!!!
Here are the blocks sewn together.
This is a close up. Now, my question is, why do people complain about appliqué? When I teach my freezer paper method of appliqué, people usually turn their nose up and complain about all that prep work. Geeze! It is no way as time consuming or back breaking as what I did this weekend! And I’m not through yet! Now I have to study the quilt and try to figure out how on earth I’m going to quilt it! Gads, what I don’t do for my grandson! ;O)
Check out the Calendar on the Sidebar. There are several new classes this week, including Fab Five Fun, Fast & Flirty with Carolyn E; Little Duffle with Cindy S.; E-Reader Cover with Sue. You can see details about these and other classes on the calendar on the Sidebar or call the shop for information and to register.
On Another Note: Val Spiers Sews has a nice tutorial and links for making hexagon coasters!

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
During the holidays I was remiss in posting (or making) my blocks for the Modern Monday Quilt Along. This weekend I caught up. Above are my last three blocks. Okay, so they don’t look anything like the patterns that Jennifer had up. I looked at those and just didn’t think they looked wonky enough. Besides, I’d just be making more scraps. So, I took the scraps I already had and made these three blocks.
Above are all my blocks together. Now the big decision is how to put them together. Jennifer has instructions up, but I’m not sure what I’ll be doing as I want to make the quilt a certain size for that very tall grandson.
First I have to decide on the sashing fabric and do I want a border or not. I always thought that gray was gray, but it’s just like white…there are a million different versions of gray. Above are the three that I used in the quilt and an extra one that never made it in because I thought it was too blue.
Do I want to use white for the sashings?
Do I want to use light gray?
Do I want to use a darker gray?
I can see this is going to involve some thought and testing and…hey, I have an idea…why not ask the 16 year old young man that I’m making it for. I bet he’ll have an opinion. I’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, check out Lynn's blog and see what she is doing with her blocks. Thank you Jennifer for this fun Quilt Along.
Some Notes: Don’t forget to check the calendar for all the fun classes/events going on at the shop this week. Quilts For Wheels is today. I admire all the work these women do for those in a wheel chair. Note: Another Happy Scrapper Bee has been added. So, for those who would prefer to meet during the week, you can get together with Buffie on this Wednesday. Also, don't forget to stop in at the shop and get your FREE snowman pattern.
ON ANOTHER NOTE: Fabric And Flowers has a tutorial for a Bikini Bottoms Block. Really cute.
Until next time,

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
This is block 61 of the Modern Monday Quilt Along. It’s called Improv. Guess why! Jennifer told us to take our little scraps left over from other blocks and make a totally improvisational block. I think this has been my most fun block. Not only do I love the creative process, but I absolutely love using those scraps. I liked creating this block so much that I might make some more. I certainly have plenty of scraps. The last I heard, Lynn was going to have some blocks to show us this week, so check out Alamosa Quilter. Then go to Jennifer’s blog and see what the pattern is for this week.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
This is Modern Monday Quilt Along Block 60 -the No Name Block. I agree with Jennifer, it isn’t much of a block, but was easy and fast and my kind of block for this busy time of year. Check out Jennifer’s blog and see what the pattern is for this week. Lynn said she wouldn’t be doing a block this week and would show us later, but you still might stop by her blog and see what she’s been up to.
On Another Note; Julie Lewis teaches doll making at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and this week was featured in Jennifer Ackerman-Haywood’s column in the Grand Rapids Press. Julie also has a wonderful blog where you can see pictures of her dolls and adorable chickens. From what I hear, Julie makes the best Baklava in the world and the recipe is included in the Press article. You can read all about Julie in the article here.
Also: Michelle of With Heart and Hands has a nice tutorial for a coffee press wrap and some potholders.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
It is Modern Monday Quilt Along time. This is Block #59, Sunshine Star. Jennifer said that it is really a Sawtooth Star block that she renamed. I really don’t see that is it all that wonky and thought about not doing it. There just seemed to be too much precise piecing for me. Then I remembered why I joined this group – so I could improve my piecing skills, and decided to make the block. I rather like how it turned out. I bet if I had tried to make such a precise block I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Go figure.
The last time I talked to Lynn she didn’t know if she would have time to do these last blocks this month and may just wait until the end and do them all at once. Hop on over to Alamosa Quilter and see what she is up to today. Then go see what Jennifer has up for us today.
On Another Note: Have you been to visit Ahhh Quilting? I love her blog and if you click on the tab “free patterns” you will see some really cute quilts.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
Happy Monday! I hope everyone had a wonderful Holiday. We have another Modern Monday block today. This is block number 58, Four-Patch Snowball. It was an easy and quick block to make for which I’m thankful. I was busy getting ready for Thanksgiving and didn't get to this block for the Modern Monday Quilt Along until Sunday. I am exhausted and glad that I was able to quickly get this block completed. Hop over to Alamosa Quilter and see what Lynn’s block looks like, then go to 42 Quilts and see what Jennifer has for us this week.
On another note: Just in case you didn’t get enough sweets over the weekend, check out this cute tutorial at Truly Custom Cakery for making a melting snowman cookie.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
I almost titled this post “No Laughing Allowed.” Above is block #57 and is called Piano Keys. Okay, I’ll admit it. This block looks nothing like the pattern that Jennifer had up last week. I don’t know what happened. Obviously I didn’t follow the directions when I put it together, but, hey, Jennifer said for us do what makes us happy, so I did. However, I think I must have done something else wrong because my block was slightly smaller than the 6 ½” required. I was not in the mood to make another one, so I put the grey strips on two sides and made it the right size. I think it will work and once it is in the quilt, no one will notice. Hop over to Alamosa Quilter and see Lynn’s block. Then go to 42 Quilts and get the pattern for this week.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
It’s Modern Monday Quilt Along and this is block #55 called, (duh) Hearts! Since I love appliqué, this block was a whiz for me. Hop over and see Lynn’s block for this week. Then come back and see all of the blocks I have so far for this quilt.
Here is the block on top of the stack of blocks I have made for this quilt. Jennifer said, “Hearts are the best shape in the world to learn how to applique! They have outer curves, a deep inner curve, straight lines and a point - almost everything you need to learn in one shape!” So if you’d like to practice your appliqué, you can find the pattern on Jennifer’s blog. While there, you can also see what block she has up for us this week.
Here are all my blocks together to give me a shot of how this quilt might look when finished. I think there will be some sashing between the blocks and I haven’t decided on a border. I may start putting it together and not wait to have all of the 64 blocks in it as I’m making this for my grandson and thought it would be a nice Christmas gift. I’m not sure if I can make that goal however.
A new class has been added to the calendar. Feeling Groovy, a table runner, a bed runner, or a wallhanging, class will take place at the Attic Window Quilt Shop this Thursday, Nov. 1 from 10-3. You can see a picture of the quilt on a post here. If you are interested, give the shop a call to register and get a supply list.
On Another Note: It’s that time of year again when we start thinking snow and Christmas and the holidays. I thought this Plain Jane tutorial for a Snowman Mug Rug might be just the thing to get you in the mood.
Until next time,

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG #54
It’s Monday already! I can’t believe where the weekend went. I didn’t get hardly anything checked off my to-do list. Did you?
This is my block for the Modern Monday Quilt Along. It is Block 54 and called Tumbler. Because of the camera and lighting, the one square looks navy blue or black. Actually, it is the dark grey that I have used in previous blocks. This was a fun block to make and I think will go nicely in the quilt. I know I had talked about taking a picture of all my blocks together, but I forgot and now the sun is down and am not even going to try to get a decent picture. Hop over and see what Lynn’s block looks like, then head over to see what Jennifer has planned for us for this week.
I’ve been frantically looking for ideas for gifts to make for Christmas. Since I’ve been at this for a number of years, most of my family and friends have received handmade gifts in the past. Consequently, I need something different, a new idea. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d appreciate it.
I did see this recently and thought it would make a wonderful gift for a special friend. I’d like to make a set for myself, too. Stitched in Thyme has a wonderful tutorial for a Ticker Tape Place Mat. I can’t wait to try to make one of these. Since we had a beautiful afternoon here in Michigan, I went for a walk and picked up some maple leaves that I thought would make a good pattern.
Until next time,

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
It’s Modern Monday Quilt Along time again. We are getting near the end, as this is block 52 and is called Hash Tag. I love this block. I wonder what it says about my psyche when I say I loved the slicing and dicing part, and the freedom…oh the freedom! Soooo..., before I reveal too much, hop over and see what Lynn’s block looks like, and then go see what pattern Jennifer has for us this week.
I went to the West Michigan Quilt Guild’s show this past weekend, so the rest of the week I’ll show you pictures from that. If you are a scrappy quilter, be sure and stop by tomorrow and see what you can do with scraps! I was amazed and immediately went through my trash. Yes, trash, because I threw away scraps that I thought were way too small to use. Wrong!
On Another Note: Little Miss Shabby has a tutorial for a liberated wedding ring. Great way to use those scraps.
Until next time,
♥

MODERN MONDAY
It’s Modern Monday Quilt Along time and this is my block for today. This is block #51 and is called Posy. I like it, but I doubt I’ll use it in my quilt as I’m making this quilt for my 16-year-old grandson and he’s asked for NO flowers. I’ll use this and some other blocks in a table topper or something else. Now go over and take a look at Lynn’s block. I know she has it completed as she had a nice freezer paper appliqué tutorial last week. Scroll down a couple posts and check it out. Then go see what Jennifer has for us this week.
Attention: Our own Barb David who introduced us to Twilling, has published another book. Book Two is now available. It contains 12 full size patterns and instructions for the twilling stitch. You can read about and order it by going here.
Don’t forget: The West Michigan Quilters’ Guild, “Quilts on the Grand” show is October 5-7 at the DeltaPlex Arena. Mark your calendar now!
On another note: I Heart Linen has several nice tutorials that were posted during the Zakka Style Sew Along. I like week 10, the zip organizer by Spotted Stone. Check it out.
Until next time,

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
It’s Modern Monday Quilt Along and today I have my block finished and it actually looks like it is supposed to. This is block 50 and is the Orange Peel block. We have 14 more to go, and then the fun starts as we put it all together. Jennifer says that a “significant portion” of the remaining blocks will feature appliqué! Yeah! I love appliqué.
Check out Alamosa Quilter and see what Lynn’s block looks like this week. (You might also look at her previous post and see the mug rug I sent her. It was so fun to make). Then head over to 42 Quilts and see what pattern is up for us this week.
ANNOUNCEMENT:

Need Gifts? I’ve been looking around for gifts to make for the holidays. I thought this Mug Bag original. Take a look at it on Red Brolly. It’s a long post, but you can find the link to the pattern at the bottom of the post. Check it out!

THIS IS THE SITUATIION
I know - this block looks absolutely nothing like the block that Jennifer had for us last week. I swear I was not drinking when I made it. This is the situation.
Since last Wednesday I have been helping my daughter take care of a three-year-old. (Her grandson, my great grandson.) It takes two of us, trust me! I know I should have made my Modern Monday block earlier in the week, but when I saw all that piecing involved in making that block, I kept putting it off.
Then I got the call for help from my daughter. So, after four days of “business” and utter exhaustion, I schlepped down to my sewing room and nearly cried when I again looked at the block I was supposed to make. Bone tired and dog weary I thought, I just can’t do this. I wondered why this week’s block couldn’t have been something easier like the wonky block I saw last week on Greenleaf Goods. Then it hit me. Why not? I could have that block knocked out before my daughter came back from the store with the-little-one-who-has-all-that-energy, so I tackled it right then and there. No one will know when I put the quilt together that this is not the required block (only you and you won’t tell will you?) So, I hurried up and got it finished just in time. I think it will work, don’t you. Now go to Alamosa Quilter and see what the real block should look like. Then head over to 42 Quilts and see what the pattern is this week.
Fine Craft Guild has a circle quilt tutorial. Check it out.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
It’s Modern Monday Quilt Along today. I don’t know where the week goes. I almost didn’t get this block done in time. Of course, when I saw all the piecing required I kept putting it off. Sunday afternoon I decided I better tackle it. What a mess. It isn’t wonky enough to suit me. Maybe, cutting off the tips of the chevrons counts as wonky. No? Besides that, this block was supposed to be 6 1/2” square. It turned out a quarter inch short on one side. Oh, well, I’m sure I can fit it in some way. My piecing is a joke!
Want to see how an expert does it? Check out Lynn’s block at Alamosa Quilter. Then go see what pattern Jennifer has for us this week.
Oh Fransson has a unique way to handle those small blocks. Check out her Stamp Collection tutorial.

MODERN MONDAY QUILT ALONG
I almost forgot that it is Modern Monday Quilt Along time. I guess because the US is on holiday, I thought the rest of the world was too. When it dawned on me that I needed to post on Monday (holiday or not) I got busy and made my block. This is block #47 and is called Lantern. Above you can see how it will look on point.
I took this picture because it is how it will probably look in my quilt, on square. Take a look at Alamosa Quilter and see what Lynn’s block looks like. Then hop over to 42 Quilts and see what block Jennifer has for you this week.
Also, check out Freeze Frame and see the darling doorknob quilt that Annie made when inspired by a card that I sent her. It is so clever and I’m thinking, wouldn’t something like this make wonderful Christmas gifts!
I thought this interesting. One Good Thing by Jillee tells you how to make your own laundry color catchers. This should save you some money!
