A GREAT GIFT IDEA FOR YOU

Hello quilting friends.  I hope you are well and taking advantage of the sales at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Cathy M. sent me these pictures.  This is what she said:  "Jeny's (her daughter) MIL asked if I could make pillows for the granddaughters of her best friend who passed away suddenly.  Cindy (MIL) wanted the pillows to have a pocket to insert pictures of their grandmother."  Above are the pillows.
Cathy inserted pictures of her grandchildren just to show us how the pillows would look.
This is another picture of one of the pillows.  Cathy said, "I made a large pocket to handle several pictures.  I was thinking this is a great idea for a family.  It might be a good graduation gift too, for the kids missing their big school events this year."   What a great idea.  These pillows could be used for so many different occasions.  Thanks for sending pictures Cathy, and for the fantastic idea!

IMPORTANT: As you know the Attic Window Quilt Shop is closed due to the pandemic but you can still place an order. Chris said that you can do curbside pickup or she will ship to you.  Just call her at the shop or email her at BrownAttic@aol.com.

Remember!  Support your local quilt shop!  We want to go to the Attic Window Quilt Shop when this "stay at home" thing is over!!!!  I miss everyone!

WHAT WE DO FOR OUR LOVED ONES

Before I leave the year behind, I want to show you this quilt that I made for my grand daughter for Christmas. Not the sort of thing I'm used to doing, but it did have some applique so that made it more enjoyable.  Besides, when a loved one asks me to make her a quilt, it thrills me.  Problem solved I know just what to do for Christmas.  I couldn't find a pattern that didn't have lots of itty bitty pieces involved, so the design is mine, wasn't difficult, but I copied the Spartan Head from a flag my daughter had.
This is a close up of the quilting.
Another close up of the quilting.  My grand daughter is tall and my daughter kept telling me to make the quilt bigger.  It ended up too big for my small short arm so I had Mary Gee quilt it.  I think she did a tremendous job.  And my grand daughter loved the quilt.  Makes my heart sing.
DON'T FORGET to sign up for the Heart of Winter Tour bus trip.  You can read about it here.  I'm really looking forward to visiting the four shops on the tour.

LOVE THIS GIFT BOX IDEA

Cathy sent me pictures of this fabric gift box that she made.  She was working on it at Happy Scrappers at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and I asked her to send me pictures when she had it finished.
This was about as far as she got when at Happy Scrappers.  This is the bottom and outside of the box.
Above, is the completed box.  I love it!  What a nice gift for a loved one.  The pattern is from Geta's Quilting Studio and there are three different designs included in the pattern.  Thanks Cathy for sending pictures.  You did a great job on this box.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT CHRISTMAS GIFTS?

I know in this heat that Christmas is not on your mind, however, now is just the time to start thinking about those gifts you want to make.  Misti is well on her way in the gift making category.  Above is this cute little phone charging station that she made for her daughter Em.  Misti said it took her less than two hours to make.  This is what she said:  "It was super easy and not much fabric.  The hardest part was turning it right side out, but well worth it."   The pattern requires "some fusible fleece and that hard stuff that you use in the bottom of a bag - Peltex."  Misti said that she had this project completed and in her hands for only ten minutes before her daughter took possession.  She said she's going to make another one tonight.

Misti was kind enough to send us the link to the free pattern and you can find it here.

Thank you Misti for sharing your project with us.  Love those fabrics you used.  Thanks for the link too!

A GIFT TO WARM MY HEART

I have said it before, quilting friends are the best.  I was overwhelmed when I received a package in the mail the other day and it was from Germany.  Above is what my blogging/quilting friend Bobbi sent me.  She said it was just to cheer me up.  I was thrilled!
I spread the items out so you can see them better. I will show you what was behind them in a minute.  Above you can see the adorable hand made postcard that she sent and she wrote me a note on the back. What talent!  And the key chain is wonderful and will be well used.
This is a close up of the snap bag.  It is so cute and has two rings for keys.
Also included was the pattern for the frog thread catcher.  Bobbi said that she had read on the blog that we could not get the pattern anymore, so she send me one that she purchased in Germany.  How wonderful!  I can’t wait to try to make this cute little guy.

Bobbi, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and for sharing your talent with me.  I love everything and will think of you often as I use the various items.  Hugs to you.

    QUILTING FRIENDS ARE THE BEST!

I have said "Quilters are the best!"  Above is just another example of how caring quilters are.  Lynn who owns the Alamosa Quilter blog, which is on my sidebar, sent this to me.  She said that since she doesn't live close enough (she lives in Colorado) to give me a hug, that she wanted to send me some cheer.  I am overwhelmed by this lovely little pouch, needle carrier and rope bowl.  The card is beautiful too!
I have been admiring the rope bowls that Lynn has been showing on her blog and told her I wished I lived closer so I could take her class.  This is a small one, just the right size for sewing things like buttons, gadgets, candy...of course candy! The on thing I noticed was how sturdy the bowl is.  I had no idea!  The little needle carrier is clever too and will be so handy.  I don't know how she made it.
I think I've mentioned before about my love of bags and this little bag is so cute and just the right size to carry my pink rotary cutter.

Lynn,, thank you so much.  Your thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.  You are the best!

    IT'S GIFT MAKING TIME

Most of us are thinking about what to make for Christmas gifts this year.  Now certainly is the time to start thinking about that.  Above is a darling apron that Misti made.  It is a See and Sew pattern.  I like this one because it has a bib.  I don’t know about you, but that is where I need the cover.  All the splatter lands above my waist.

    IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT
    • There are two Craft Days scheduled this year at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  This has always been a popular event and in order to accommodate everyone, Chris added a Craft Day to the calendar.  Originally they were scheduled for Friday, November 21, and Saturday, November 29.  However, things have snowballed.  There are far too many things going on right now and the Craft Day scheduled for Friday, November 21, has been moved to Friday, December 5.  If you prefer, there is still room in the Saturday, November 29.  Just call the shop and let Chris know what you would like to do.  I’m looking forward to this fun event.  You can see what we made last year here and the 2012 year here.
    DON’T FORGET:
    • The Jingle Bell Hop is Nov 14 through 22.  Mark your calendar now.  With the purchase of your $5 passport you will receive a free pattern.  Each participating shop has designed an exclusive ornament that you may purchase as well as a table topper kit designed to compliment the free pattern.  Participating shops will have extended evening shopping hours for your convenience.

    MAKING SMALL GIFTS

Thought I’d let you know what I did this weekend.  I made these Little Wallets.
The Little Wallet is a pattern by Valorie Wells.  It is so easy to make…fun and quick.  I use mine to hold my credit cards.  Now they are all in one place and I’m not searching through my purse muttering "where the heck is that darn card.”
It is also a great way to use your scraps! It calls for a snap, which I didn’t have on hand.  I didn’t want to use a button because I know from past experience that it only catches on things in my purse, so I used Velcro.  I’m thinking of making more as they would make nice little Christmas gifts.  Imagine how much they will be used and enjoyed…especially when you tuck a gift card inside.  What did you do this past weekend?

    DON’T FORGET:
    • To mark your calendar for the West Michigan Quilters’ Build Quilts on the Grand.  The date is October 3 through 5 at the DeltaPlex Arena.
    • Happy Scrappers meets Wednesday and Saturday this week at the quilt shop.

    ISN'T THIS STUNNING?

Huh?  You’re probably asking what the heck is this and why would we want to look at it.
Here’s the rest of the story.  I have a friend whose hobby is ironing.  I kid you not.  While stuck inside because of all this snow she told me she not only cleaned out all her drawers and closets but she spent a lot of time ironing.  “I ironed everything,” she told me.  “I iron a lot,” she said.  “Always have.”   Then she proceeded to tell me that the other day she was putting her iron away while it was still hot and it burned whatever she sat it on and got her iron all gunky.  I knew right then what I would make for her.  I made the above ironing pad.
I started out to make the larger version of the little ironing caddy that I blogged about here, but discovered I didn’t have enough of what was on the supply list.  So I made my own pattern using the fabric and Insul Brite that I had on hand.  I added the two ties in case she needed to wrap the pad around the iron when she put it away. Now I bet you think it's stunning...right? ;o)

    HAPPENINGS AT THE ATTIC WINDOW
    • The Modern Bee will meet on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 10-2.  This is a new Bee being formed for those who are interested in Modern Quilting.  This initial meeting we will be discussing what modern quilting is and discuss what our meetings will involve.  Also information will be distributed about the Great Lakes Modern Quilt Guild and how we can participate in that.

ARE YOU IN A GIFT MAKING MOOD?

A while ago I posted a link to Patchouli Moon Studio.  She had a tutorial for a Monster Pencil bag. You've got to go see all the cute bags she made.  I have two darling great grand boys in Pennsylvania so I had to make these Monster bags for them.
Of course, then I had to make something for their sisters, so I made pencil bags that looked a little more feminine and not so scary.  I didn’t think they’d like monsters.
Above you can see the lining in them.  These were all so fun to make.  I’m getting excited about Christmas, are you? Drop me a line and let me know what items you are making for gifts this year.

    MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW:
    • Black Friday Stitch-In will be held Friday, Nov. 28, starting at 8 a.m. at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
    • Craft Day will be held Saturday, Nov. 29, from 9 – 5.  Join us and make some fun Christmas gifts early.  Four to five projects are being planned for the day.  Class time is free but there will be a small fee for project kits.
ON ANOTHER NOTE: Fave Quilts  has a tutorial for making a Pieced Christmas Tree Block.  Thanks to Vickie D. who sent me the link.  Vickie said she thought she’d embellish the tree and make a wall hanging.  You could also use this block as a hot pad for a nice hostess gift.  Check it out!

    WHAT GIFTS ARE YOU MAKING?

What have you been working on?  Are you busy making Christmas gifts?  I’ve been working on some small things.  I have lunch once a month with some lady friends and we have a small exchange at Christmas, so I’ve been working on gifts.  Above are items I’ve made from the links that I previously posted.
One of my friends mentioned that she liked the hot pad I gave her last year and needed more, so I made these two above from UFO blocks.
This is a close up of a block left over from the quilt I made from Kim Schaefer’s book Flower Festival.
And this hot pad is made from left over block from a quilt I made several years ago using the Twisted Sister ruler.  I intend to make more cookie crumb table toppers, coasters, pot holders using the directions in links I previously posted.  If I have time I want to make some monster pencil bags for my great grandchildren from the link I posted yesterday.  Hope you all have a fun and productive weekend.

    A QUILTER TOUCHED MY HEART

Sometimes we just don't realize how we touch another life.   After spending the day with an 89-year-old friend (it was her birthday), I was tired when I got home.   However, I perked up when I went to the mail box and found a large package from Stephanie (Peas In A Pod).    I opened the package and found this lovely gift.   Needless to say I was thrilled, and when I read her accompanying card I was in awe and tears.  Let me share it with you.

“Dear Caroll,  I made this quilt for you quite some time ago…back when your DIL was dying.  I wanted to do something for you.  I had it all done except for the binding and I couldn’t decide how to finish it.  I finally decided to face it instead of binding it and got it done.  I’m sorry it is so far past the time when it would be appropriate.  I hope you like it.”
It’s funny how things happen.  It is nearly a year since my DIL’s death and I have been thinking a lot about her lately, so this gift arrived at just the right time.

Stephanie goes on to say, “It is called “Above the Red Line” and is meant to help you keep your thoughts positive.  It was inspired by your blog post, wherein you described your pastor’s sermon about keeping thoughts “above the red line”…i.e., positive.”

This quilt couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time as my thoughts about my DIL have been a bit negative.  I've been beating myself up with thoughts of ...I should have done more...Maybe if I’d done this I could have been more help...Maybe if I’d done that….(you get the picture).

“I made the part above the red line bigger to signify more thoughts being positive.”  (Stephanie later told me that she thought the red was too bright.  To me it is perfect because I need bright to draw my attention and remind me where my thoughts should be.) “The straight line quilting is supposed to signify straight thinking.  The part below the line is smaller (fewer negative thoughts), and the wacky quilting signifies negative thinking"
“I designed and pieced it using Jean Wells’ “intuitive piecing” techniques and the fabrics (except the red, white, purple and stripe (on back) are hand dyes by my friend, Jackie.  I hope you like it and that it brings you good thoughts and happiness.  Love and Hugs, Stephanie”
You can see the work and thoughtfulness that has gone into this beautiful quilt.  My heart is touched. Stephanie has helped me keep my thoughts above the red line and focus on all the good times I had with my DIL.  I haven't decided where I will hang this quilt, but I know it will be someplace where I can see it early in the morning so I'll remember to start my day with positive thoughts and think of my dear sweet friend, Stephanie!  THANK YOU SO MUCH!  I've always said quilters are the best!

DON’T FORGETTall Pine Quilters Fall Quilt Show is Friday, October 18, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the All Saints Church Hall, 500 Iroquois Drive, Fremont, MI.  Admission is $4 which covers the two-day event.  Vendors will include the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

    QUILTING FRIENDS ARE THE BEST!

Today I attended the Happy Scrappers Bee at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I’ll tell you all about that tomorrow.  Now, I want to tell you about the wonderful surprise I found when I got home.
Dear friend Jeanne B. made this lovely mug rug and sent it to me in the mail.  Isn’t it fun getting a package in the mail!  I love mug rugs.  A few years ago I realized I was ruining my coffee table where I always placed my coffee mug.  Now I can get rid of that old one I made back then and use this lovely red heart.
And notice – she sent me this darling handmade Valentine card too! You can click on the picture to get a closer view.  She is so artistic!  And the message inside warms my heart. Thank you Jeanne!  You are my Valentine!

THIS WALLET MAKES A NICE GIFT

It’s that time of year when I start frantically looking around for gifts to make for Christmas.  I made this wallet this afternoon.  Actually it’s called a Scrappy Loyalty Card Wallet.  The pattern was free from A Spoonful of Sugar Designs.
It was easy to make with a few scraps and some heavy iron-on interfacing.  I thought my teenage granddaughters would enjoy having one, especially when they find a gift card tucked inside.
This is the scrappy outside of the wallet.   Here you can see the bright red button and the hair elastic used for the closure.  It was a fun and quick project to make.  I might just make one for myself.  As you can see in the previous picture I thought it a good place to tuck a tea bag for future use.  But first I have to make another one for that second teenage granddaughter.

On Another Note:  As I look around my disorganized sewing room I’m reminded of this saying:  Organized people are just too lazy to look for things.  No one can accuse me of being lazy.  I spent most of the afternoon searching for that magazine with the perfect pattern for a gift for my grandson.  Anyone ever accuse you of being lazy?

DO YOU WORK BEST IN LARGE OR SMALL?

Today I have a couple of things I want to show you.  The above pillow is from Applique With Attitude by Piece O’ Cake Designs.  I love this book and want to make all the designs in it.  The designs are just the right size for my taste (big but not too big).
This is another picture of the pillow in a different chair.  This pillow is 14" square.
And I wanted to show you this little mug rug.  I recently sent it to Lynn of Alamosa Quilter.

I wanted to send her a thank you note for all the wonderful things she mailed to me.  I blogged about that here.  My intention was to make a post card like Annie of Freeze Frame does.  I love Annie’s work and blogged here  about a post card that she sent me.  Well, about five minutes into my project, I realized I lacked in the skills necessary to make a cute little card like Annie does, so I turned it into a mug rug.  I think I need more practice on working with the small stuff.

    QUILTING FRIENDS ARE THE BEST

Sometimes we just don't realize how we touch another life.  In my last post I told you about our Tea Leaves Class at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I thought my special gift deserved a post all its own.  Above is the mini pouch that Stephanie made for me.  Stephanie has her own blog, Peas in A Pod, and came up from Kalamazoo to spend the day with us.  She told me that as she was leaving to come to class she grabbed this darling (my word) pouch with the thought that it would cheer me up.

She was so right!  I have been a little down lately (just having a little stress) and this lovely gift was what I needed.  It not only boosted my spirits, but made me realize how nice it is to know someone cares.

It looks so professionally done with its zipper and little tabs at each end, and this cute little zipper pull!  Stephanie is not only a talented quilter, but she knits (see her most recent post about her knitting here),  and makes beautiful decorative stitching, and is now learning to spin wool!  And on top of that she’s smart!  We should all call her Doc Steph because she has a PhD and is a university professor.  I am in awe that she does.

This is the inside of the bag.  I love that lining.  And...besides all the things I pointed out above, Stephanie is a wife and a doting mother to a seven year old (She may be eight now.  I can’t keep up!)  I posted about Little Pea as the Attic Window's youngest quilter here.
The bag is just the right size for storing all my Tea Leaves!  Not only will they not get lost or get in a folding mishap, this makes it easy to carry them from place-to-place when I want to hand stitch them to the backgrounds.

Stephanie I can’t thank you enough.  You made my day!

On another note, Crafty Cupboard has a tutorial for a baby quilt.  It will be a great way to use that charm pack, or use up those scraps.
