HAVE YOU USED THIS RULER?

When the Happy Scrappers met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop last week, Chris (shop owner) treated us to a demo.  Above we watch as Chris shows us how to use the Creative Grids 45 degree double strip Kaleidoscope ruler. 

Actually, I think Adrienne asked her about this ruler.  Adrienne said she had purchased it before going home for the winter, then forgot just how to use it.

 Chris showed us how to cut the strips that were sewn together. She had all the pieces cut in no time.  The ruler makes this quick and easy.  No more cutting one wedge at a time. Then we played with the pieces and came us with this.

 But we had more pieces to play with.

 So we added them to the block.

Then we added more pieces.  This is such a fun way to use that wonderful ruler and to make a stunning quilt or table topper.  Stop in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and pick one up today!

ONE RULER SO MANY DESIGNS

Don't you just love it when you spend big bucks for those rulers and find you can use it more than once.  Better still, you really love that ruler when you can make so many different designs with it and none of them look alike.  That's what happened when stopped in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and brought the Angles With Ease 2 book and special Triangler ruler by Heather Peterson that goes with the book.  Check out this cute guy above.  The pattern in the book is No Monsters Allowed.

 I also wanted to try the China Doll pattern.  Instead of making the whole quilt, I tried making just one block using fabrics from my scrap pile, and came up with this table topper.

This is a table runner that Vickie S. made and is now on display at the shop.  I want to try the Strip Stars pattern next.

Vickie S. also made this table runner prior to Christmas.  That is what made me say, I have to get that book and ruler.

 And I did, and went home and made this table runner.  Both Vickie and I used Christmas fabrics to make our Petals on a String table runners, but this pattern would look great in any fabrics.

There are 11 different patterns in this book and they are so varied that you will never guess that you use the same ruler.  Stop in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and pick up your copy of Angles With Ease 2 by Heather Person of Anka's Treasures and the special Triangler ruler.  You won't be disappointed.

OH THE BLOCKS WE CAN MAKE WITH THIS NEW RULER

I stopped by Vickie S.’ Squedge class at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and have some pictures to show you.  Above is Catherine’s work in progress.

I love the fabric Catherine chose and never would have thought you could use something like the above to make this block.  It is going to be awesome!

As I told you before, Vickie is an excellent teacher.  She puts together lots of samples so her students can see the various designs that can be achieved by choosing different fabrics.  Above, Vickie shows the students how cutting one piece can change the look of the block.

The above is a college of the block samples that Vickie made.  You can see how important it is to choose the right fabric to get the look you want.  If you are interested in taking a class with Vickie, just call the shop and talk to them about it.

MAKE THIS BEAUTIFUL BLOCK WITH A NEW RULER

Yesterday I showed you a picture of Vickie S. who is teaching the Squedge Ruler class (and other classes) at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I wanted to show you these pictures from her last class, but we were having computer problems.  So, I get to show them today.  Above is Diana’s table topper.  I love these beautiful autumn colors.

This table topper was made by Caroljean (CJ).  What a beautiful quilt!

This is Judi’s table topper.  I’m not sure which Judi this is but I sure like the quilt!

Vickie is teaching another class today (Friday) and I’ll try to get up to the shop and get some more pictures.  I love seeing the different, unique patterns develop as you build the block.

LEARN TO USE THE SQUEDGE TOOL

NEW CLASSES ANNOUNCED!  Have you ever used a Squedge tool?  I had never heard of it until Vickie S. showed me this stunning table runner.  She said there are two different times you can take a class from her and learn how to use this tool while making a table runner or table topper. (Read below for dates and times)

Above are two different table toppers.  It looks complicated, but I know that with Vickie teaching the class you will have no trouble making something stunning.  She is an excellent teacher.

Doesn’t this make you want to take Vickie’s One Block Wonder class?  When I saw this darling table runner I knew this class is a must.  I wasn’t up to making a full size quilt, but this table runner is the perfect size for this fun project.  I’m also thinking that it will make wonderful gifts during the holidays.  Look for Vickie’s class on the September calendar.

Vickie also showed us this beautiful wonky quilt.  She hadn’t intended to teach a class on this one, but I think we have her convinced to do so.  It probably won’t be until the fall, which will give me enough time to collect all those batiks and black and white fabrics. 

 

This is a closeup of one of the blocks.  When Diana and I were trying to convince Vickie to have a class, Vickie said it would be fun to trade squares of fabric with others in the group.  Sounds like fun to me!  

This is another quilt that Vickie showed us.  Isn’t it beautiful!  Thank you Vickie for sharing with us!

JULY & AUGUST CLASSES:   

• Irish Chain – Vickie D. will be teaching this two week class on Wednesday,  July 23 from 6-9.  It is a beginning to intermediate class.  It is a fun and easy basic quilt done with 2 ½” strips. Class fee is $20
• Big Blocks – Vickie D. will be teaching this one week class on Thursday, July 31 from 5-9 p.m.  It is easy to piece this lap size quilt that is 72 ½” square.  Class fee is $15.
• Rectangle Rumba Tablerunner – Vickie D. will be teaching this one week class on Saturday, July 26 from 20-12.  This two color runner is easy to piece and perfect for any table.  The fee is $10.
• Squedge Tool – Vickie S. will be teaching us how to use this new tool!  On Thursday, August 7th, from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. we will learn how to use this tool and make a table topper or table runner (your choice).  Or you can take the class when Vickie teaches it again on Friday, August 15th from 10-2.  The fee for each class is $10.

FRIENDSHIP FROM THE NETHERLANDS

Evi McGrath of the Netherlands recently sent a package to the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  I posted previously about Evi, here and here.  Evi sews with the Tuesday Bee during the summer months when she and her husband come to Grand Rapids on vacation (her husband is from this area).  Included in the package that Evi sent were pattern and directions for making these darling Friendship Hearts.  Earlier this week Chris shared Evi’s instructions and the group made these darling hearts shown above.   

Tuesday Bee met earlier in the morning and Marilyn showed her latest quilt.  I believe this is Marilyn’s own design.  She came up with another way to use the pineapple ruler.  Isn’t that awesome!

Adrienne also had several things to share that day.  Above she shows us the gorgeous quilt that she was binding.  And she shows us this wonderful sewing bag that Judi A. made for her.  Check out that little thread catcher on the table that goes with it.  And look at that lime green lining, Adrienne’s favorite color!  What a wonderful gift! Judi, you are awesome!

A very special THANK YOU to Diana for taking these pictures for the blog.  Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of Diana’s work as I have asked her to help me with picture taking.  It seems that she and I are on a different schedule.  She is often at the shop when I can’t be there, so in the future we can have more pictures of all the fantastic things the ladies of the Attic Window Quilt Shop are making.

WHAT YOU CAN DO WITH ONE RULER/TOOL

Have you seen all the special rulers out lately?  I’d love to try them, but hate spending money on a ruler that I will use only once.  The other day Chris gave me the Wedge Ruler by Creative Grids and told me to play with it.  So I did. 

Much to my surprise, I found that there are lots of wonderful patterns for using these various rulers in the shop.  I chose this pattern above.  However, after the first couple blocks I decided not to make an entire quilt and made the table topper in the first picture.

Then I took a second look at the pattern that comes with the ruler and decided to use my scraps to make that block.  It made a nice table topper.

I liked that pattern so much that I got some brighter fabrics and made another table runner.  I really like this one.

Then I thought, what else can I do with this ruler?  I made the wedge square and then placed wonky strips across the bottom of each block and came up with this cute block with the star in the middle.  This was such a fun ruler that now I’d like to make the large quilt in the first pattern that I showed you.  I would recommend getting this ruler and looking at all the new patterns for using these rulers in at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.

NEW STITCHERIES, RULER, PICTURE

Above is a beautiful new Stitchery that Barb David made as a sample for the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  This pattern is called Gingerbread Square by Crabapple Hill.  Kits are available at the shop.

This is another sample that Barb made.  The pattern for this darling wall hanging is called Smiley Tree and is by Jana Davidson.  It is so cute!

 

After our Whimsical Gardens Group met recently, Barb G. showed us a couple table toppers that she made using the Creative Grids Straight Out of Line ruler.  I didn’t realize it until I got home, that I didn’t get a picture of the entire runner.  The ends are turned over so the backing shows and little buttons hold them down.  What a clever idea.

 This is another table runner that Barb G. made.  Barb’s blog is Garden Path Quilts.

Judi A. took this picture for me earlier this month when Diane Moore stopped in at the shop looking for fabric to border this darling quilt.  I’m sorry but I don’t have any information on the pattern.  Thanks Judi for your help!

ON ANOTHER NOTE:  A Few Scraps has a tutorial for a poly pockets see through zipper pouch.  I like this idea because you can so easily see what is inside.  This is a great gift for children and adults alike!  (Can you tell I’m starting to think about gift giving time?  Vickie told me this evening that Christmas is just three months away!  Yikes!  I have to get busy NOW!)
